Stallone squares up for Rocky VI

His last bout was with his protègè-turned-rival Tommy Gunn in Rocky V.

Now, more than 15 years on - and 30 years since first putting on his boxing gloves - Rocky Balboa is making another comeback.

Hollywood sources confirmed last night that Sylvester Stallone has agreed to star in the sixth instalment of the Rocky saga.

Filming starts in Los Angeles in December and Stallone, who will turn 60 next year, is also lined up to direct.

A spokesman from the star's agent Paul Bloch said: 'There is a script, but it has yet to get the green light.'

This is industry-speak for Stallone being in advanced talks, but having yet to officially announce his commitment to the project.

In Rocky VI, a lonely, poverty-stricken Balboa comes out of retirement and looks to keep his hand in with a few low-profile fights.

But his return to the ring causes a media frenzy and a promoter comes up with the idea that he should fight the heavyweight champion, Mason 'The Line' Dixon.

Stallone is understood to have been back in the gym in preparation for the role.

Although the film is to be made in Los Angeles, it is unclear whether it will be set in Rocky's hometown of Philadelphia. The supporting cast has not been announced.

Rocky will signal something of a renaissance for 59-year- old Stallone, who will turn 60 during filming, and comes as he attempts to revive his other career-defining role, Rambo.

The fourth film in that series is currently in pre-production and will also be produced by Stallone.

The actor became one of Hollywood's highest-paid leading men as the monosyllabic Rocky.

For the first film, in 1976, he was paid just £15,000. But for each sequel he got a huge pay rise - and for Rocky V he earned £10million.

His last role was a cameo in last year's Sky Kids 3. Previously, he had failed to set the box office alight with D-Tox, Driven and the remake of Get Carter.

How does Rocky Balboa, who made so much money boxing , become "poverty-stricken" after all these years?
Did he invest in Sylvester Stallone movies?
Seriously, the first Rocky was a very good film, and the sequels progressively got slicker and emptier as Stallone found the right formula for commercial success. Too bad, because there was SO much to like in the first one.

Maybe. In Rambo III he fought with the mujahidin. In Rambo IV he can go back and fight against them.

Dont you remember? When Rocky went to Russia, his brother in law left power of atornay to his crooked lawyer, who liquidated his property in a real estate scam of sorts, and lost it all, which led us to Rocky V.

I am under the impression that not only is Rocky broke and needs a few fights, but so is Stallone...broke, and needs a comback...especially after GET CARTER.

Hollywood never overestimates the intelligence of the American people. A 60-year-old "Rocky" fighting the heavyweight champion? Sure, why not?

Next we'll see John Travolta revive the role of Vinnie Barbarino in "Welcome Back Kotter." In 2006, Vinnie and the Sweathogs are still mixing it up in Kotter's classroom. In the first episode, Vinnie gets dentures and worries about his ability to get a date. Meanwhile, Mr. Kotter and his wife go to the Social Security office to get the paperwork started on his retirement. The Sweathogs show up unexpectedly to try to convince the Social Security people that "Mr. Kotter" is not old enough to retire and that he should keep on teaching because the Sweathogs really, really need him.

See, I could be a Hollywood writer. It's that simple.

Let's see. Rocky is now 78 years old. But he cannot resist getting in the ring against the 6'8" Muslim World Boxing Champion. At first, the fight looks like it over when Rocky's dentures fly across the ring. But somewhere, deep down inside, Rocky finds a reservoir of . . .

ARGHHHHHHH.

Is Rocky going to fight Willie Nelson?

Now aged 60, after a lifetime of fighting, Rocky must face his most fearsome opponent yet ... incontinence.

I liked the first and third Rocky movies...loved Mr. T in Rocky III. A 60-year old Stallone in the ring...don't think that will fly.

Yeah, but is anyone else impressed at the condition that 60 year-old guy is in?!
