I will post what many are thinking. If the FR secret police can't handle it then so be it:

There is a side of me that is sad for the Shapiro family because their son died.

HOWEVER, THERE IS A SIDE OF ME THAT CELEBRATES ROBERT SHAPIRO'S SUFFEREING DUE TO HIS SON'S DEATH. THAT SCUM GREEDY LAWYER SHOULD SUFFER FOR REPRESENTING THE MURDERER SIMPSON. MAY HE SUFFER FOR THE DEATH OF HIS CHILD.

I would say that I am sorry for your lose, ichabod1. I am also sorry for Mr. Shapiro and his family. Some times we have no control over what others do to themselves we can only grieve for them.

I think that's over the top.

I hope that Shapiro now puts himself in Fred Goldman's shoes and uses his considerable talents to help crime victims pro bono, instead of collecting paychecks from wealthy thugs.

I think a year or so of work, or two years or so of military service, between highh school and college is an excellent idea. Not at all because they can demonstrate that they can suit up and show up, though.

I think that a year outside of an academic setting really would mature the typical 18 year old. A lot of the ivory tower stuff that passes for critical thinking and analysis in colleges won't pass the smell test of someone who has some real experience under their belt.

I noticed that in the "Books" section, he listed the "Big Book", which was linked to the book, Alcoholics Anonymous. My guess is that he had troubles before with substance abuse.

"MAY HE SUFFER FOR THE DEATH OF HIS CHILD."

The son was a drug addict. He was also one of these wild-ones, that idolizes the likes of other alcoholic/addicts such as Jim Morrison.

How is the father of a 24 year old responsible for such things?

I would guess it is not a Christian wish, for the father to suffer. I can't say if it would be a Jewish wish.

It probably would be a muslim wish, from my overall impression of that faith tradition.

Very sad. Prayers for the Shapiros. To lose a child at such a young age is a horror that I wish on nobody.

How can you "celebrate" such suffering? Despicable!

Condolences to Bob Shapiro. His son's overdose death is such a waste of human life.

For those who wish to "twist the knife" because Shapiro was a defense lawyer: shame on you. Everyone deserves a competent and zealous defense in our judicial system. He's not to blame if the jury acquits a guilty man.

So, if you're driving a car a little too fast, or skiing or hangliding it's ok to die because you chose to do the activity?

We're all ultimately responsible for the risks we assume. It's a fact of life. Sometimes we "get away" with things and sometimes we don't. Skiing, hangliding, speeding are not without risks. You could hit a tree like Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy. We try to manage risks with safety equipment in cars, helmets and training. Non-monogamous marital sexual activity is one area that involves risk. It could be a pregnancy, HIV or just being found out cheating in a relationship.

This concept is a point I discussed in the embryonic stem-cell debate here on FR. I specifically recall an example about a spinal cord injury in high school football star. I'm sorry for his injury but he accepts that risk when he plays. Asking us to destroy nascent life to paper over the consequences of his choice to play football is immoral, ethically bankrupt, arrogant and barbaric. The same would have gone for Chris Reeve and others.

It's isn't heartless when you side for life that hasn't even yet had an opportunity to breath or enjoy the choices you yourself suddenly regret because of your injury. Fortunately, we don't have to make those choices since there are so many other opportunities for stem cell sources other than destroying life.

Ultimately, 24 year old law student Brent Shapiro is responsible for his own death.

You are not implying that Sonny Bono's and Michael Kennedy's deaths were accidents, are you?

Who could believe such a story? Oh yeah, I forgot, about 99.9 percent of the Sheeple.

It's a big leap between "it's okay to die" and who might hold responsibility for a sudden and unexpected death.

I absolutely agree. Hi son had nothing to do with the outcome of that murder trial. He was 13 years old at the time. AND I can tell you that the death of this boy has affected so many people, his brother, his fiance, his family and friends. They are all grieving so all of you people who say his father is getting what he deserves are just ignorant and small minded. I knew brent. No one deserves this kind of pain.

Robert Shapiro is on Larry King Live right now. He is shattered and broken beyond words. My heart goes out to him and his family.

I am stunned by some people's lack of sympathy during the Shapiro family's time of grief. Their son is DEAD! Nothing else matters, frankly, right now. At least have the dignity to keep your personal comments re: Mr. Shapiro off this forum during this time. This moment is about Brent! Please show some respect!
