See, this is one of those things that I would be putting over on the LEFT side of my lined pad described in reply #14 and weighting it a 9 on a scale of 1-10!!!
To many infatuated Schwartzenegger supporters just forget all about this kinda crappola. Thank goodness you seem to not suffer from short, or long-term memory loss!!!
All those voters who signed the petition for the "Save 187" campaign were just blatantly ignored by his highness and now he wonders why he's down in the polls, for Pete's sake!!!

Another case of the perils of federalism. To my mind, we were all better off with the original intent of the framers that questions of citizenship were determined by the individual states. But that hasn't been the law (or at least the supreme court's interpretation of it)for a 150 years. Witness Roe v. Wade.
Don't get me wrong, I support 187 in principle, but better minds than mine will have to devise a path that will succeed in the face of a constitutional amendment.
The 14th is what's wrong with this picture. It was used to do a whole bunch of idiotic things, including wiping out the entire basis for the 10th, if you ask me!!! (well, that's Federalism at it's worst anyways)(idiots like Lester Maddox and George Wallace provoked that wipe-out)(we can't seem to tolerate regional or even state movements in this nation in the era of the 14th)(the war within the constitution continues between amendment 10 and 14)
There IS something wrong with this picture. Being a citizen should have meaning. But as long as the courts interpret that anyone who steps on our soil has the same rights as a citizen (virtually wiping-out the meaning of citizen) we've got no place to stand. Look at the legal wranglings over court access for "enemy combatants."
To my way of thinking, there are definite distinctions and degrees of being an American/Californian CITIZEN!!! There are voting citizens, property owning citizens (all types from intellectual, business to real properties) and citizens who have served their nation or state in some public endeavor and those who have defended the same with combat risk to their lives on foreign seas/soils! Chief among these, however, are mothers who successfully bring and raise with the help of responsible fathers... natual born citizens who are taught not to take our nation for granted!!!
I believe that if one publicly denounces their nation in time of war, declared, or not, in ways designed to turn others against it's survival interests, that they have effectively renounced their being a citizen! Further, I believe if they agitate to encourage the abandonment of this nation's sovereignty to any "world body" they also have effectively renounced their continued citizenship!!!
Again! You are so right!! Why should we care about our country/nation/state if being a responsible, caring CITIZEN has no meaning. Those not fulfilling minimal responsibilities to this nation should NOT enjoy the distinctive honors that variable degrees of citizenship have earned them! Of course we're all created equal, but our subsequent achievements are not and will never be!!!
So whataya think about that???
I used to be amused at those posters who would say, "We can't prove Al Qaeda was responsible for 9/11 so we can't attack them." Somehow, being an openly declared enemy of the United States and advocating the death of Americans just wasn't good enough! Perhaps this weakening in the understanding of allegiance led to Bush's famous, "With us or agin' us" posture. Someone had to spell it out! There's no free ride.
It's mushy think that makes a Cindy Sheehan the "free speech" poster child out of a self-absorbed, destructive individual. You really only have to ask, "What good does this woman do, or who does she help?" I can be an armchair general on the Iraq war, but it sure wouldn't help!
People's intentions come down to moral and ethical questions. Their actions are covered by law. Cindy got busted today. I can only hope it's the first step to an appropriate confinement.
Didn't mean to turn this into a screed on Cindy Sheehan. I happened to catch Limbaugh today playing Shanklin's take on the old Association song: "Everyone Knows It's Windy" -- converted to "Everyone Knows It's Cindy". Cracked-me-up.
Anyways... back to the subject at hand... I predict some pretty vigorous soul searching by the Republican Party at all levels after the 2006 election! Things just cannot continue in the directions they are currently floundering in!!!
