While National Guards are trying to give food and water to the stranded animals, Sgt. Minke Minton, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's office is hunting and shooting them and says that's more "humane".

Is there something in the water down there that makes state and local officials nuts? Nobody seems to have a lick of plain common sense.

If you can get close enough to a stranded and starving dog to take a clean shot-why can't you try and rescue it ?

The video shows National Guardsmen rescueing dogs and commenting as they saw the sheriff shoot a couple of dogs.

I don't know what, besides donate to those trying to help rescue as many as they can... and if you are anywhere near, take in a pet.

There is no excuse for this. Alley Cat Allies and other animal welfare groups are busy right now trying to help stranded animals. There are enough people who care about animals that no one has an excuse to kill them.

This might be unpopular, but our National Guard need to be looking for humans, not taking care of pets. It's taking away valuable time to look after the animals. Granted, the animals are probably better behaved than some of the humans there...
To: teenyelliott
yeah, shoot the sheriff but don't shoot the N.G.

The video doesn't actually show the poor dogs being shot, but you hear the shot and then there is an interview with the sheriff, it also shows how the National Guard is working on rescuing them.
But I can understand not wanting to watch it. That's why I gave the WND link in the URL, so people don't accidentally click on the link, and get the video going. The National Guard was rescuing the pets three blocks from where the maniac sheriff was shooting them.
I stopped it at the beginning, then I went back and watched it.
It is an outrage, that an official of the local government is doing this. He is actually out hunting them down.
To: Aggie Mama
The National Guard is NOT shooting the dogs, they are out there rescuing them, giving them food and water, until the other rescue organizations are able to come and get them. The local sheriff is the one who is shooting the dogs.

You dog/cat people sitting back home in your air condition intact houses are more flipped over a homeless animal than a now homeless family who lost all worldly possessions in the storm of the century. The last thing needed in the 90000 square miles of devastation are roving packs of rabies infested wild dogs/cats foraging on whatever, including undiscovered corpses.

You know as long as people are just being pulled out of their houses and having their guns seized everything was OK but this will piss the post 2000 freepers off!

This might be unpopular,... Yes it is.
The sheriff is a mental case. He's just taking "the edge off his Jones" by shooting dogs. If I were a Guardsman in the situation that they are in, I would not want to be hearing close or distant gunfire of a random nature from anyone, including the local LEO's.
