Poll: Californians' Biggest Concern Is Illegals

The overwhelming majority of California voters are concerned about illegal immigration – and nearly half say the state should declare an emergency along its border with Mexico, a new poll reveals.

The survey by Field Poll found that 49 percent of registered voters are "extremely” concerned about illegal immigration, and another 32 percent say they are "somewhat” concerned. The poll also found that 44 percent of voters think that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger should declare a border emergency. Among Republicans, 62 percent favor the move, while 35 percent of Democrats and 35 percent of Latino voters support the declaration.

Arizona and New Mexico declared states of emergency along their borders in August, citing increased crime and illegal immigration. Some California lawmakers have called on Schwarzenegger to do the same.

Voters by a 56 percent to 41 percent margin oppose civilian border patrols, according to the poll. Patrols were assembled by the so-called Minuteman Project in Arizona, with hundreds of volunteers on the lookout for illegal aliens crossing the border. But support for patrols in California is strongest in areas closest to the Mexican border.

Field Poll’s Mark DiCamillo said: "The closet to home you get, it seems like it’s a more urgent problem.”

nearly half say the state should declare an emergency along its border with Mexico

The rest didn't understand the question because they don't speak English.

Ater seeing what happened in New Orleans, I would think Californians would be worried about out of control violence in the aftermath of a major earthquake.

Sounds like a task for Janet Reno...she's pretty good at removal in these instances. Just ask Elian Gonzalez...assuming he ever makes it back to the U.S.

Don't tell that to the democrat politicians of California.

This week they tried to push gay marriage and driver's licenses for illegals. Both issues that the majority of Californians are against. But since they don't believe in the concept of majority rules, they continue to push their agenda of pandering.

Hey, but those 81% are all StormFront members, or they just don't understand that 15 illegal aliens standing on a street corner in Bakersfield create management positions in Peoria.

Schwarzenegger has a great opportunity but he's acting like it's no big deal. Yawn. There will be a heavy price to pay.

Huh?

We've had lots of quakes, and violence never followed.

Illegals are our big concern, period.

The two Democrat govenors who declared their borders "Emergencies" did it to get federal funds and to make their voters believe they weren't pro-illegals...which they are. If the GOP allows the lying 'Rats to get to the right of them on this...we can kiss the country good-bye.

We've had lots of hurricanes on the gulf coast without gang violence starting either. NO had a very tolerant attitude towards criminals before Katrina. They've now set a precedent for having gang violence after a major disaster. I don't thing the gangs in other parts of the country let this go unnoticed.

We have had violence over alot less than an earthquake. There is no doubt that a devastating earthquake in Los Angeles would unleash the same kind of behavior we saw in New Orleans.

And by the way, there already have been *major* quakes in Cal, and no violence ever followed.

We had looting after earthquakes, but it was nipped in the bud by daybreak....

and most of those red tagged buildings were burglarized over weeks.
