Part of New Orleans's southern charm comes from its green canopy of live oak trees. Many of those trees have been standing in water for more than a week, depriving their roots of oxygen.

We haven't even recovered the bodies and yet NPR knew everyone was wondering about those old oak trees. They also mentioned in the report that no one is really there to check on the oak trees because they have evacuated.
To: plain talk
I suspect those trees have had their roots submerged before.

This is an outrage. Why are the oaks being ingored? George Bush doesn't like oak trees.

Any idiot knows that a live oak takes longer than a few weeks to kill with water. I've seen them survive in ponds for 2 years before succumbing to water.

This story should come as no surprise. Most liberal environmentalists value trees & animals more than human life.

George Bush doesn't like oak trees. Not only that, he's ordered that only the white birch trees be pruned and fed. It's just despicable.

I've seen them survive in ponds for 2 years before succumbing to water. Of course this water is slightly more toxic. A good dose of the wrong toxin could certainly speed up the process.

Actually the sewer/bacteria won't harm the trees over a short period of exposure. Oil of gas or other chemicals could be another story. Live oaks are tough trees.

I Saw in Louisiana a Live-Oak Growing
I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing,
All alone stood it and the moss hung down from the branches,
Without any companion it stood there uttering joyous leaves of dark green,
And its look, rude, unbending, lusty, made me think of myself,
But I wondered how it could utter joyous leaves standing alone there
without its friend near, for I knew I could not,
And I broke off a twig with a certain number of leaves upon it,
and twined around it a little moss,
And brought it away, and I have placed it in sight in my room,
It is not needed to remind me as of my own dear friends,
(For I believe lately I think of little else than of them,)
Yet it remains to me a curious token, it makes me think of manly love;
For all that, and though the live-oak glistens there in Louisiana
solitary in a wide flat space,
Uttering joyous leaves all its life without a friend or lover near,
I know very well I could not.

Although live oaks like their roots drier than cypress, they normally grow just above the wet stuff. In fact, one ways of knowing what the historial high land in NO was is look for the old, old oaks, like in City Park at the Dueling Oaks for instance.
Those trees might have been underwater briefly, but they aren't now.
Anyway, I suspect any trees able to grow next to wetlands can deal with getting wet from time to time.
