Uh, they weren't flooded Friday evening. Or Saturday.

New Orleans Escapes Ivan Thursday, September 16, 2004

New Orleans (search) dodged another one when Hurricane Ivan (search) made landfall about 175 miles to the east early Thursday. It shook the trees with tropical storm-force gusts of up to 53 mph.

"We are ecstatic," said Tansy Jones at the mayor's office. "Rainfall was only two-tenths of an inch."

As the storm headed into the Gulf of Mexico (search), packing winds of 165 miles an hour, the city battened down and the airwaves echoed with dire warnings that this would be the long-dreaded hurricane that would inundate the city with 20 feet of water and leave thousands dead. The traffic jams of fleeing evacuees in stalled bumper-to-bumper traffic stretched all the way the Texas.

Warnings had been so worrisome that officials opened the Superdome for people who had nowhere else to go, and 1,100 spent the night on concourses and in the end zone stands.

Do you think the mayor has been good for the city the last seven days?

You're right..how to convince people is the problem. But that's why that FULL national guard should have been called up..to provide law enforcement as they moved people to higher ground. The next question is this though: Where would the people have gone? So just as we can understand the difficulties of getting these people OUT before the storm, you would think that the governor and the mayor would be a bit more understanding of the massive effort of getting people out NOW (without power, etc) and getting supplies IN>

Nagin used to be a Republican?? Get ready for the media to be pouncing on that soon. "Nagin, who was a REPUBLICAN as recently as 2002...." I'm surprised they haven't picked up on this already.

Please read post 42.

For 3 years, he has been the best that New Orleans could have hoped for and he knew it would be difficult from the start. With drugs, sex, and power offered to leaders, many succumb. He never did and continued to fight for the city he loved. He REALLY cared and I feel sorry for him as it was impossible from the start. I knew it to be true when a relative died, a sister of a very prominent "insider", and the police escort never showed up. It was a message. Morial Jr., being gay, succumbed. Nagin never did!

And while they're at it, fill the empty buses up with bottled water and even C-Rations so that the people in line waiting to board will not be in danger of starvation and dehydration..waiting for the long overdue helicopters bringing supplies.

Yes, and why didn't the mayor order prisoners transported to jails in other parts of the state before the hurricane hit? This would have freed up personnel and averted the need to let criminals loose on a suffering city.

Someone who gets it...if you know New Orleans, you know that Nagin isn't the issue. He really is the best thing that's happened there in a long time. He couldn't do it all. I am currently evacuated and if you really know what's going on you know that Nagin is one of the good guys.

Nagin is none of the things you've said. Unfortunately, I have very limited time online since I'm still trying to find out if my family and friends are safe or whether or not they are homeless. There are very good people in New Orleans and it makes me sick to see people on Free Republic, a place that I have loved for a long time, saying they got what they deserved. We didn't deserve this. How much money has LA asked for to build up the levees? We never saw it. We contribute to this economy...look at the gas situation. We have had to fight to get help from the feds. We pay taxes too.

People here want to write off New Orleans. Maybe not you, but I've read it. Well, I am a staunch republican. I am as conservative as they get. But my heart is being ripped out because, as bad as it is, I love New Orleans. We are in pain. This isn't about blaming Nagin or defending Bush. Today, right now, this is about MY LIFE. People are dying. I don't care about parties today.

I am just sick about some of the stuff I'm reading here. You all are too smart to believe the MSM that you so loathe. You don't know what's really going on here. Nagin planning Southern Decadence? Give me a break. It's not the federal government's responsibility to help New Orleans? Since when??? Yes, LA should have been more prepared for this, and they should have had more cooperation from the federal government when they tried to build up those levees.

Are there people in New Orleans looking for a handout? Tons!!! But Nagin has never been one of them. I don't live in New Orleans, but as a Republican I would have been proud to vote for him. All the Republicans in New Orleans voted for him.

For all of you who get that this is not about politics and who really care, thank you for your prayers.

I agree with you that the mayor and governor are finished politically.

Furthermore, i believe that an investigation will soon be underway wrt that mayor. There was something very ominous about that radio interview he did last night. He talked for probably 10 minutes about the needs of the drug addicts. That being the reason they were looting and overtaking hospitals and shooting at the police, etc, etc.

I didn't hear him say much about the women who were giving birth on the I-10 and in the Astrodome. He didn't say much about the people in hospitals who were on respirators. He didn't say anything about the diabetics out there who are probably having a "jones" for their insulin.

But he did state that he himself wasn't a drug addict. This guy needs to be investigated. Because if he is involved with drugs it could have contributed to the incompetent leadership he's shown throughout this whole thing.

Another thing he did that made no sense was evacuating the felons from prison very early on. Why did those people get the best treatment while the diabetics and elderly were walking the streets in waist deep waters or sitting on their roofs without food and water.

This isn't about blaming Nagin or defending Bush…

Nagin seems to disagree today. It's the feds fault he claims.

I'm glad to hear some good things about Nagin although saying he is "the best N.O. could have hoped for" is faint praise for the city or the mayor or both.

Nagin may be, as you say, one of the good guys; however, the more dire the circumstances the more critical the need for strong and wise leadership. Nagin has fallen far short these last seven days. New Orleans deserves and needed better.

Thank you for your posts.

All things considered, he's the best. Again, the "Big Easy" never had a chance.

The Big Easy never had a chance, this week, to stop the natural devastation of the city.

They had a chance to keep their pride, their spirit, their soul - for themselves and in the eyes of the nation.

A good leader can help a great deal even, and especially, when devastation occurs.

This is not a good leader:

"Someone needs to get their ass on a plane and get down here and figure it out," he said, calling on President George W. Bush to be more responsive to the crisis that's taken hold of his city. "Excuse my French, everybody in America, but I am pissed. They are feeding the people a line of bull, and they are spinning and people are dying. They don't have homes. They don't have jobs. The city of New Orleans will never be the same."

Also Republican Hailey Barbour, governor of Mississippi, how does he stand when put beside that luny woman governor of Lousiana? Head and shoulders above her.

What a waste of a beautiful state to have such stupid politicians as there are in Lousiana. God help any state where Democrats rule.
