Iran's dam will sink tomb of Cyrus the Great

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 31 – Iran is building a dam which once completed will destroy the 2,500-year-old historic ruins of tomb of the first Achaemenian king of ancient Persia.

The Sayvand Dam being constructed in the central Fars province will inevitably cause river waters to submerge Persepolis, the capital of ancient Persia, and Pasargard, the site of the mausoleum of the first Persian conqueror Cyrus the Great.

The dam which is near completion is some eight kilometres from Pasargard and 50 kilometres from Persepolis, according to an official in Iran’s Cultural Heritage Organisation.

The dam is to start operation in early 2006.

Water built up from the dam would destroy the historic sites which contain magnificent artefacts about ancient Iran’s heritage and have buried underground much of Persian civilisations’ hidden secrets.

Cyrus the Great, believed to have been the first king to have introduced a universal declaration of human rights, lived from 580-529 BC.

Rememere the effort to move Abu Simbel from the Valley of the Kings when Egypt built the Aswan dam? It could be done if they have a mind to do it.

BARBARIANS!!!!

Where is the UN???? If this were a 'western' country doing such a thing it would be presented as a threat to humanity, ethics, decency, and liberal civilization.

Muslim coutries are pretty bad in general on the matter of historical preservation.

Anything that predates islam and the pedophile profit (spelled that way on purpose) isn't worth preserving.

It could be done if they have a mind to do it.

Go to the poster's FR page and read about Cyrus the Great.

I can see why they would not only be ambivalent about the archeaological site, but would also actively participate in wiping out any memory of that dynasty. It represents everything the current rulers of Iran are against and everything they fear.

Dude, sorry about your tomb. That's what you get for being nice to the Jews.

This what happens when Persians stop being Persian, and become faithful followers of Mad Mo. If it conflicts with Mo's teachings or version of history; destroy it, or burry it, or both.

Like the Budda's in Afganistan, it's a pitty.

Erasing the pre-Islamic past. Just like a totalitarian system to do that.

Islam = Enemy of all humanity

Abu Simbel's move was a UN effort (from when the UN had some value) and was not initiated or paid for by the Egyptian gov't.

Plenty of other archeological sites could not be moved.

Two of the great, ancient civilizations destroyed by Islam were Egypt and Persia. Muslims could care less about Cyrus the Great. Iranians in general, yes; but Muslim fanatics, who currently rule the roost, no.

Cyrus the Great was genuinely a great king, founder of Persia, admired by the Greeks, remembered in the Renaissance as a model king, savior of the Jews in the Babylonian exile.

None of that matters to Muslims, nor do ancient cities and monuments of the past.

You mean they like to tear down what ever was there, build new mosques, then claim everything as 'sacred sites'?

Then cry like babies when anybody mentions what used to be?

Yea muzzies don't have a great track record.

Thank you for clarifying. I love archaeology and the loss of these historic areas, no matter where, is tragic.
