President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Fox: New Orleans mayor says there are 100,000 refugees still to be evacuated from New Orleans. Meaning that for every person in the Superdome, 3 are stuck outside or other buildings.

That was quite an ugly picture Smith painted of the situation in NO with his opening statement on his program tonight.

Aw geez, I keep seeing the shots of debris and nothing but a foundation left. I know what it means, but your experience is the first that really connected me to the enormity of it. Be strong.

"On Wednesday reporters listening to horrific stories of death and survival at the Biloxi Junior High School shelter looked north across Irish Hill Road and saw Air Force personnel playing basketball and performing calisthenics.

Playing basketball and performing calisthenics!

When asked why these young men were not being used to help in the recovery effort, our reporters were told that it would be pointless to send military personnel down to the beach to pick up debris."

Anyone watching FOX?"

Yes I watched Shep at 3pm and he is repeating the same thing at 7pm. "No one is telling the people where to go for help." My question is , If Shep has the ability to communicate with the people at Fox, why doesn't Fox news find out what the plans are for this group. There are so many evacuation projects going on throughout the city I find it hard to believe that these people are being ignored intentionally. Shep either you are part of the solution or you are part of the problem.

I saw a cameraman taking pictures of 3 guys struggling to put something in a truck..I would have had more respect for the cameraman if he had put his camera down to give these guys help.

He's incredibly frustrated because all of those people, many of them infants and children, on that overpass, have not yet been helped.

In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war

REPLY:

Seems to me that decades of local Democrat government should have also seen this coming.

What did these locals do, sat on their butt and complained.

It also seems like to me that the local New Orleans government has the responsibility to build dikes and levees.

Why should an above amount of my taxes be siphoned away from my area to do projects for those who should have enough sense to do those things for themselves.

Saw some film on WDSU about an hour ago...some of the water in the Metairie side of the 17th St. canal is going down. But the gap where the levee gave way is huge.

A friend of mine, an 84 year old lady may have been trapped in her home by Bayou St. John. That is sad. Aunt June is (I hope it is not was) a tough trooper, but little and frail. She could eat more than just about anyone in an all-you-can-eat buffet. Sigh.

I wonder what happend to my friend Morgan. He lived not far from June, but in a multistory building. His health wasn't good, either.

But one of my nieces lives in Covington. Unlike most of the rest of her family, she will have an unflooded house. Hope it didn't get smashed by a tree.

How would any of us feel standing there for two days watching babies that are sick from the heat and dehydration? and even police officers won't give these people gathered there instructions on where to go and what to do? One cop he was trying to talk to wouldn;t even look at him .... kept walking with video camera in hand -- wanted to take pictures -- or something like that is what he mumbled...
