BAGHDAD. Aug 31 (Interfax) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani blamed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and militants led by him for a stampede in Baghdad on Wednesday that is feared to have claimed up to 1,000 lives.
Talabani, in an exclusive interview with Interfax, said Zarkawi was behind mortar rounds that were fired into a crowd of Shias marching to a shrine for a religious festival and caused panic among them.
The president accused Zarkawi of provoking religious strife in Iraq.
not Bush?
Don't worry. the MSM media will spin it in Bush's direction.

Oh so right you are. EVERYTHING negative and bad gets spun his way -- remember: Good News for America is bad new for the libs and vice versa...
Maybe Talabani will finally grow a pair and stand up for his country. All it takes to complete the mission in Iraqi is for the weak-willed people of Iraqi to stand up and say enogh is enough!
They're not blaming the Zionists and Israel???
This incident certainly puts the loss of like caused by the war in perspective. Stampedes at this or that shrine are practically a regular occurence in the Middle East. 1000 dead and it will be off the radar in a week.
Debka (normal caveats apply), at:
http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=665
reports this as:
"Al Qaeda-Iraq claims mortar and machine gun attack
that killed 1,000 Shiite heretics at the Kadhimiya
mosque in Baghdad."
And adds:
"The Shiite government is at pains to keep this
information dark to prevent Shiite popular reprisals
that could tip Iraqi into wholesale sectarian violence."
Were it not for Katrina, this story would be headline
material. Makes ya wonder what else is being swept
under the rug.
