Alvarez excels at boot camp
The Post-Standard ^ | August 20, 2005 | Pedro Ramirez III

Spc. Jon Alvarez, of Baldwinsville, is entering his third week of basic training as the designated leader of his platoon, Army recruiters said.

Alvarez, 39, departed Syracuse on Aug. 2 for basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., as the oldest new Army Reserve recruit in Central New York, taking advantage of an Army rule change in March that raised the age limit to enlist from 34 to 39.

Alvarez, a staunch defender of the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies and a supporter of U.S. troops, has angered some readers of The Post-Standard with his in-your-face views. He has hung in effigy filmmaker Michael Moore, accused those who criticize the military of treason and sponsored a contest to build a papier-mache pig using pages of the Quran.

But Alvarez also has his fans. Before leaving for basic training, he became a regular co-host of "The Bill Colley Show," from 5 to 9 a.m. Fridays on WFBL-AM (1390) Talk Radio.

"He did amazing on his (physical fitness) test," said Sgt. David M. McDougall at the Army Recruiting Station in Mattydale.

Basic training at Ft. Jackson in the summer?!?!? We have lived in a "sauna" down here the past few weeks. Alvarez deserves a Congressional medal of honor! :-)

Although I'm not trying to nit-pick, shouldn't a person going through boot camp be a PRIVATE?

Jon Alvarez presently resides outside of Syracuse, NY. He is a graduate of the University of Texas and taught 8th grade U.S. History before embarking on a career in sales. Jon became interested in politics and political commentary after 9-11 ( when he, along with many of his countrymen, awakened from their peaceful slumber).

An active member of his community, Jon is involved in the county Republican committee, Neighborhood Watch, and the local Elks Lodge. He is the founder of the group "Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood" or PABAAH, which currently has over 1,000 members with a stated goal of not supporting those celebrities who failed to support America in her time of need. "They do not deserve our hard-earned money", Jon says. He also has his own website forum at http://groups.msn.com/AlvysForum. His commentaries are published by various conservative webzines and America's Voices.

What a great story. I was 22 when I went to boot camp. Same state, different branch. (You know, the one that owns that island over near Beaufort?)
Anyway, I thought I was pretty old, since most of the rest of the guys in Platoon 212 were 17 to 19.
Amazing what motivation does.

Nope. I went through Basic Training with a lot of guys ranked as high as SPECIALIST (E-4). You can get that on your initial enlistment agreement if you have a college degree.

No "Congressional" in Medal of Honor.

Other than that I agree with you post in a light-hearted sort of way. Some may reply with a more serious take.

See #15, also you can be bumped up a pay grade or two (depending on the branch of service) for having attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

You see, our Armed Forces recognize and reward folks who show incentive in other areas and excel. BTW, those enlistment advantages are not new.
