"Yes, exactly. How does giving yourself a 25% tax cut sound? And there's more - you can give yourself a tax cut whenever you want by just changing your spending patterns. It puts YOU in control of how your dollars are spent, not that of politicians in far-off capitols."

And the politicians and government agencies will no longer have to know how much you make or how you spend your own money.

I'm not going to debate the merits of the Fair Tax on this thread, this thread to me is just a report that the Fair Tax book has generated a lot of publicity and sales.

The Bill itself is available for free online and there are a number of FR threads which discuss the opinions of Freepers re: this bill.

The H.R.25 FairTax Bill is here

How about all the crime people do to avoid paying income taxes?

Ridiculous argument. Flat tax is dumb.. Fair tax is brilliant.

You've yet to make a single valid point. You're one of these people who get their heads stuck in one mindset and refuse to change it despite all the facts flying in your face.

Fair tax will never happen. You and ancient_geezer can keep dreaming. Repeal of the 16th Amendment is the prerequisite for any "fair" tax to become law, and it just ain't happening.

What are you talking about? The 16th amendment doesn't require the government to impose an income tax, not does it prevent the government from imposing a uniform excise tax (authorized by Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 of the Constitution).

In fact, the only way to get rid of the 16th Amendment is to have a replacement tax in place -- Congress will not cut off their source of funding if it is still being used.

The FairTax bill eliminates income, payroll, gift, and estate taxes by removing those sections from USC 26.

The chance of the Fair Tax happening is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the flakey Flat Tax so many of you love.

#1 NY Times Best Seller.. Enough said. There's outrage all over the country over our politicians and taxation.

Fair Tax will happen.. Either before or after the big spenders in Washington take our budget and country to the bottom pits of hell, it will happen.

People with your attitude never got anything done in this country.

No IRS.

I am a supporter of the NRST, but the claim by many supporters that the IRS is eliminated is a lie. There will still be, and has to be a federal agency charged with collecting, enforcing, and investigating evasion. The IRS will still exist.

I am a supporter of the NRST, but I could not support the NRST without the 16th amendment being repealed PRIOR to the NRST taking effect. They MUST be tied together.

To allow the 16th amendment to remain in place after the NRST is instituted will without question give us both an income tax and the NRST. That is not debatable. And you know it.

The National Retail Sales Tax sounds interesting. I feel lazy and don't have time to read thousands of threads, but here are my questions:

1. Do state sales taxes continue? I would assume yes...
2. Even though tax accountants, etc. make a killing of the existing tax code, you are looking at a significant change in the economy due to these professionals having to look for new jobs and careers...The job market would be flooded with people looking for new jobs...We may not have any sympathy for accountants, but they are professionals and a significant portion of the economy.

1. The NRST would only replace federal taxes. State taxes are up to the states, naturally.

2. They'll have plenty of work during the transition period, at least. Most accountants would rather be helping businesses manage their assets instead of doing tax compliance, anyway.

NO! The taxes will be collected by each state which already has this collection agency set up. They will be paid .25% of all taxes collected. They will also be responsible for enforcement which they already do.

There is already a "strong black market" There is a 1 trillion dollar underground economoy who don't pay taxes now. Under the fair tax they will beging paying taxes without the benefit of the "Sales Tax Allowance." After all everyone needs to buy bread and milk.

Think about all those illegals who don't pay taxes now. They will under the Fair Tax.

If you think the Imperial Federal Government will not have any collection and enforcement agency you are kidding yourself.

Will the IRS exist as it does now? No. Will it have the power over our lives that it does now? No. But it will still exist.

I have read the Steve Forbes book. He also admitted two weeks ago that his flat tax is not revenue neutral and will create a deficit for 3-5 years. The flat tax is 24.65% including FICA and continues to tax business at the same rate who then pass their tax on to us. So we are essentially paying close to 50%.

In 1986 we had a flat tax with two deductions - charity and mortgage interest. It has been tweaked to what we have now. The same people who got that passed are the same ones who want it done again.

The definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

It taxes corporations at the same rate who then pass the 24.65% onto the consumer in hidden taxes. So we dumb consumer will be paying close to 50% which is a tax increase.

As opposed to now, when businesses are paying taxes out of the kindness of their hearts, and not passing those costs on to consumers.
