I had heard there were three guards and that the prisoners were in shackles. I think that is what the Knox News article said, although I have not been able to get back on the site. I'm sure their servers are being overwhelmed.
If true, then that wife of his is one tough cookie.
News just announced the Guard who was shot has died.
An extensive search is under way for the pair. They're identified as George and Jennifer Hyatte. Authorities are trying to find out if a second man, who may be an accomplice, escaped with them.
I think it was more that she had surprise on her side. I mean...I don't think the guards were expecting someone in another vehicle to just pull up and start shooting.
It also wasn't a shotgun according to Joe Howell, Knoxville News Sentinel on Fox News. It was a handgun.
Fox source saying one of perps is probably shot.
Your job is to always expect something to go wrong, especially in an uncontrolled area- until it doesn't.
Officer Wayne Morgan has died of his injuries at UT Medical Center.

Sluss said Jennifer Hyatte shot corrections officer Wayne "Cotton" Morgan three times with a handgun in the parking lot of the courthouse, where George Hyatte was scheduled to make an appearance. Kingston is about 35 miles west of Knoxville on Interstate 40.
Details of the shooting were still unclear at 11 a.m., but a witness said a woman driving a blue Ford Explorer pulled into the parking lot as officers were escorting George Hyatte and another prisoner out of the courthouse to a prison van, authorities and witnesses said.
The woman fired six times, witnesses said, striking Morgan three times. Another corrections officer returned fire, witnesses said.
Morgans condition was not available.
Witnesses said George Hyatte, shackled and handcuffed, climbed into the Explorer, which then drove toward the freeway. Witnesses said officers later found the Ford Explorer abandoned at a nearby Subway sandwich shop.
Dale Shelton of Anderson County, who was standing in the courthouse parking lot when the gunfire erupted, said he rushed to Morgans side after the Explorer left. He held Morgans hand until help arrived.
"His eyes had done set," Shelton said. "I held his hand and told him to keep breathing."
Morgan was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center aboard Lifestar emergency helicopter, officials said.
George Hyatte was serving a 15-year sentence in Brushy Mountain State Prison for aggravated robbery and a 5-year sentence for aggravated assault, Sluss said. The convictions stem from crimes Hyatte committed in Rhea County, Sluss said, and it wasnt clear yet why he made an appearance at the Roane County Courthouse.

And can this be put on the Breaking Sidebar?
WIVK NEWS HAS CONFIRMED THAT A STATE CORRECTIONS GUARD HAS DIED FROM GUNSHOT WOUNDS. HE WAS ATTACKED AS HE LED A PRISONER INTO THE ROANE COUNTY COURTHOUSE AROUND TEN THIS MORNING. THE INFORMATION OFFICER FOR ROANE COUNTY SAYS SOMEONE SHOUTED A SIGNAL TO JENNIFFER HYATTE, AND SHE OPENED FIRE ON THE GUARD. THERE WAS A GUNFIGHT, BUT THE PRISONER AND HIS WIFE ESCAPED. LAW OFFICERS ALL OVER THE AREA AREA SEARCHING FOR THE TWO, AND THERE'S WORD THE WOMAN COULD BE WOUNDED.
--- OUR RESEARCH ON HYATTE SHOWS HE WAS INDICTED IN 2002 ON FELONIOUS ESCAPE AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT IN RHEA COUNY. HE AND ANOTHER INMATE WERE ACCUSED OF ATTACKING A GUARD WITH A HOMEMADE KNIFE AND RAZOR AND ESCAPING. HYATTE AND ANOTHER INMATE WERE CAUGHT HOURS LATER WHEN THEY CAME ONTO A DUI CHECKPOINT IN FLORIDA.
It's me.
Shorty's on the run!
The prisoner was shackled and handcuffed - and the LEO was ambushed. Nothing Reno 911 about that. That, and this is right down the road from where I live. I hope they don't bother with warning shots.
Hey Tennessee Bob,
Stay safe there. You aren't too far away from all this. All the folks up there around Brushy Mountain are employed at the prison, the whole town depends on it. I'm sure those folks up there need our prayers.
FRegards,
Why aren't they shackled hand and feet, when they are being taken into the courthouse?!
I think they did return fire and either the woman or the prisoner was wounded. Details are sketchy though.
That is so true! You get complacent or off guard for one minute and you could be dead in that type of job. Unfortunately I think that is probably what happened.
