You mentioned some good points. The voters did want reform. Sadly, they didn't get much. Schwarzenegger basicly smoothed over what he was handed, and that was it. Well, that isn't quite it. He also continues to increase spending. That is dead wrong. That's why I call him a dismal failure so far. Yes he did a couple of things I like. Yes he'd done several I think are abominable, like Davis and company wouldn't have.
You mention the legislature and that's a good point. I would disagree somewhat though. Although the Legislature is disgustingly bad, Pet Wilson and those before him were able to balance budgets even when working with the likes of Willie Brown, arguably the worst thing that happened to the State of California in it's history.
I think McClintock had more 'fire in the belly' than Schwawrzenegger. I do think he could have managed to get some beneficial things done. I think your arguement is sound, I just think it might rule out any good the McClintock could have done, and I think that's a little too rigid.
Well, I gave Schwarzenegger a period of time to reveal himself. I had hoped he'd take a carving knife to the budget. It seem reasonable to me that he could have eliminated the increased spending during Davis' last couple of years, and then hold the line. Today he's all but given up on that, and worse.
His redisctrictly plan may have been technically flawed, but I do think it was a move in the right direction to break the solid hold the dems have on the state Legislature.
He's still better than Davis.
I'd sure like to see you articulate exactly why you think that, with supporting facts.
Debt has grown while Davis was unable to issue a single bond due to court challenges, spending has grown at a much faster rate, more leftist environmental legislation has passed (that Davis had vetoed), more leftists have been appointed to high level positions... Gray Davis could only dream of having a high spending budget like Arnold has passed, with full support of the Dems and limited support of republicans. Thanks to Arnold, we are subsidizing Stem-cell research, solar-energy homes and hydrogen highways at tax-payer expense, all things the state can ill afford at this time. And we will soon be supplementing tax revenues by paying for more toll-roads. He has forced expenses to local levels, resulting in local government tax increases.
Do tell. Exactly why is he better than Davis? And please, provide details that demonstrate the pros outweigh the cons I have listed above.
Tactically, I thought that he was waiting for budget passage prior to taking action.
Well, the budget's passed. Time to KFA (kick some butt).
Declare a state of emergency (fiscal).
Send the bastards in the legislature home.
git ta refommin' !
When a candidate has money of his own, it's his decision how much to spend. My comment still stands, the party did not help Simon. We can carp about his campaign not being very effective, but the guy had a very good showing considering being beaten up by a major television add campaign where Davis cronies got to slam him unchallenged for the most part.
This article covers the financial status of both campaigns as they wound down.

Davis raised $64 million for this race, and spent $22 of it on very negative anti-Simon television adds up until this article was written. Simon may have run a few, but hardly any.
In weeks running up to the election, Davis spent $3 million per week while Simon spent $1.5 million per week.

Do you think it would have been better for the U.S. if Al Gore had been elected? A good number of the arguements you're making would apply directly to the national scene.
C'mon 'girl! Driver's licenses for illegals, car tax tripling and on and on....
You seem to have the mindset which got us into this mess in the first place. No Republican is ever pure enough, so you stab him/her in the back and , voila, he/she gets 32-38% in the next election, then you complain that wee need an even more pure cadidate!
Your circular reasoning is truly mind mumbing!
Puleeze! Which Arnold Schwarzenegger were you voting for? I voted {gladly} for the RINO.
Remember the old Lou Rawls song about the woman who brought a snake in to nurse it back to life. when it became healthy it bit her! She was shocked. The snake said, "Aw shut up pretty woman! You knew darn well I was a snake before you brought me in!"
Arnold is still better than Davis.
You mention 2 items, both of which were on their way to obsolescence through referendum.
You think those two outweigh my list? Please, give me the "and on an on" details. I know not what you mean.
I'm not talking purity. The programs and people that Schwarzenegger has put in place would make most Democrats and socialists proud.
Davis - whatta JOKE !
Why do you continuously change the subject?
My point is not related to past elections. It is related to the here and now. If Republicans don't speak up and criticize this governor, now, for his leftist actions, we will continue to see 5 more years of it.
The referendum to ban driver's licenses for illegals FAILED to even get enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
I'm glad we have Arnold!
Yo---D1!!!!
The subject is California. The subject is Schwarzenegger adopting leftist programs, appointing leftist officials, and enabling socialistic spending habits.
If you want to talk about Bush, Gore, and Kerry, try another thread.
In the meantime, your mythical summaries of the fiscal situation in this state are just that--myth. We are WORSE OFF! Unless Republicans speak out, it will continue.
After all that has happened, some folks, while trying to claim they live and walk on the conservative sane side of the street, continue to befuddle as they straddle the fence and hope the script gets a rewrite before the final act and the Terminator comes through.
Instead. he is descending into a molten pit and taking what remains of the CA GOP with him.
Quite a twist to the script, eh?
Ya know what? I think you're a liberal Democrat {sorry for the redundancy} just messin' with us!
No sane Republican {more redundancy} could possibly pine for the return of Gray Davis!
When California goes into the dumpster, or gets annexed by Mexico, all his so-called Democratic/RINO friends will pin the blame on RINOLD and Davis will be just a footnote in CA history.
I'm not sure why you intellectually dishonest people infest these threads, but it's sure a hoot to watch you squirm.
If you were consistant you'd say you didn't particularly appreciate some of Bush's appointments either. You might also touch on the new Medicare Prescription benefits program and the 50% increase in the Education budget.
I do support an increase in deficit spending in a wartime setting, but the other massive spending is wrong. You know it and I know it.
You want to bitch slap Schwarzenegger because he's as bad as Davis, but then want to give a pass to someone else on the very same issue.
This must tie a true conservative such as yourself in knots.
I don't like Schwarzenegger's spending any more than you do. When you drop him a line on the subject, perhaps you can send a carbon copy to Bush.
The state won't have to go in the dumpster. Just allowing more and more foreign citizens to squat here will do the trick all by itself. The unfunded mandate to care for them is doing wonders for the state's financial standing though.
