Heat May Have Killed Second Farm Worker
UPDATED: 11:10 am EDT July 26, 2005

ROXBORO, N.C. -- A migrant farm worker who was found dead near a Person County soybean field died of heart attack or heat stroke, the county sheriff said Tuesday.

Pablo Ordaz was working at the Walker Farm, a tobacco and grain farm in Olive Hill, on Tuesday when he said he wanted to quit for the day because he didn't feel well, Person County Sheriff Dennis Oakley said.

Ordaz left the farm and was last seen walking toward a mobile home at the farm. He never returned to the home he shared with other workers.

The state medical examiner's office said Ordaz had an enlarged heart valve "that could have been a contributing factor to a heart attack or a heat stroke," Oakley said. The other workers at the farm didn't suffer from heat and were given frequent breaks and water by the farmer, he said.

Also last week, the death of a migrant farmworker in Harnett County was blamed on high temperatures.

The North Carolina Labor Department said Rito Mesa Castillo, 56, collapsed last Monday while picking tobacco in Harnett County as temperatures reached 94 degrees.

"All signs point to the fact that it was heat stroke," said Regina Luginbuhl, head of the Labor Department's agricultural safety and health bureau.

Be careful out there, folks. The heat here is really different from CA. In CA, when it gets this hot, you have no choice, your body takes over and runs for shade. Here, with the moistness (humidity), the heat can be VERY deceptive.

NC *Ping*

Please FRmail Constitution Day OR TaxRelief OR Alia if you want to be added to or removed from this North Carolina ping list.

Taking my celery and cucumber juice with me today. It's already bad outside and wish I didn't have to even set one foot outside :(

When the temp. gets into the mid 90s in NC it feels like Miami.

I had a bout with heat exaustion and heart back in June. Spent the night in the hospital. Dr. told me to quit my job.
I took his advice.

I saw some references to these juices in another post you made. Can you share any of this info? Why celery and cucumber? What other veggie juices do you drink?

Vinnie! I'm glad you are alright; AND that you took your doctor's counsel. I'm learning about the heat here. It's very, very different from CA heat. I would hazard to say.. in CA, you're more inclined to sun-stroke; whereas in the South, heat exhaustion and heat-stress.

celery has natural sodium in it and cucumber is a cooling juice...after my lunch nap, I'm going to make some before I go. This heat is murder. I make watermelon and also carrot, dandelion, spinach and some wild chickory.

Migrant worker is their job title. Illegal immigrant is their immigration status. Lib media avoids the issue by only referring to them as the former.

Well, just so everyone knows and is clear on this:

Person County Sheriff Dennis Oakley said Pablo Ordaz was working at the Walker Farm, a tobacco and grain farm, in Olive Hill, NC.

Oakley said that Ordaz was a legal immigrant who was working lawfully in the country and had been placed at the farm through a migrant worker program.

Lori Fernald Khamala, N.C. Coordinator for the National Farmer Worker Ministry, said legislative efforts were ongoing to try to extend worker's compensation benefits to more migrant workers but previous efforts have all failed. Currently very few migrant farm workers are covered through worker's compensation, she said.
