I wonder if McCain had the nerve to show up at this man's funeral. Stockdale was everything that McCain was not, a real hero.

Negative. Vice Admirals receive 15-gun salutes fired by naval guns or saluting artillery batteries. Stockdale most likely received three rifle volleys at the gravesite.

Stockdale was a Commander when he got shot down while serving as CAG aboard the Oriskany. He was promoted to Captain while in captivity.
