A man with psychiatric problems attacked a religious statue outside a Queens church with a sword and a shotgun early yesterday, then fired repeatedly at two police officers who responded, critically wounding them, the police said.

One of the officers returned fire, wounding the suspect, whom the police identified as Kevin Davy, 25, of Queens, the authorities said. The officers, Dominick Romano, 29, and David Harris, 40, were in critical but stable condition, the police said, and Mr. Davy was in stable condition, at hospitals last night.

The bloody shootout outside SS. Joachim and Anne Roman Catholic Church on 105th Avenue in Queens Village left Officer Romano with a shotgun wound to the head, the police said. His bulletproof vest blocked eight shots to his body. Officer Harris was hit five times in the right leg, causing his femur to shatter, and was struck in the arm, and Mr. Davy was shot four times, the police said. Before the ambulances arrived, Officer Harris and Mr. Davy lay 20 feet apart on the sidewalk across from the church, bleeding profusely, said Tyrone Murphy, a passer-by who stopped to help.

"I heard the officer say, 'Help me, somebody, I need a tourniquet,' " said Mr. Murphy, 35, who tore off his shirt and tied it around the officer's leg. "There were shells everywhere. There were tears running out of the officer's eyes."

Mr. Davy, who a cousin said attended the Art Institute of New York City, has mental health problems and a juvenile criminal record, which is sealed, the police said.

Obviously a lie. We know that Chucky Schumer and Hillary have created a perfectly safe, gun-free zone in New York. Chucky's law clearly forbids a dangerous lunatic from owning a gun. Case Dismissed!
