They'd rather lose elections than admit to the mistake.

When Clinton lied the focus of the MSM wasn't that he lied rather it was what a good liar he was.

It's not quite Rathergate level yet but it's getting closer as each day passes.

(ie gossip among Wilson's social set.)

That picture of Wilson & Plame in the convertable with the White House in the background says it all.

They think they're Schwarzenegger & Curtis from “True Lies”... when they're just a couple of old libs who never grew up!

A very good comment in this thread: Prosecute Plame: More Treachery in the War at Home

There have been a series of leaks coming out of CIA intended to wound Bush and obstruct the war. The Wilson/Plame case just allows us a chance to catch some of them red-handed.

Actually, both the CIA and State Department have been leaking like sieves throughout Bush's terms. Along with the Mainstream Media, they have constituted an effective "Axis of Disinformation". Just for grins, what do you think of the following hypothesis:

Why is Judith Miller sitting in jail for refusing to reveal her source? If it's Rove, that makes no sense. If it's Colin Powell, well that makes a little bit of sense, but not much, since even if it is Powell, nothing illegal was done and it would not really hurt him much. If she is her own source, it would be embarrassing to her career, but it would blow over, since once again that would break no law.

Perhaps we should look at things from a different perspective. First, WHO, professionally speaking, is Judith Miller? The answer is, one of the country's foremost journalistic experts on WMD's. She has spent years studying and investigating this issue and developing her sources and contacts worldwide. Regardless of whether you like her politics, she has a proven track record of expertise in the field of WMD's.

Second, WHAT is Valerie Plame's portfolio at the CIA? The answer is, of course, WMD's. She is in a position to provide valuable information to any journalist specializing in that subject. Since Plame was reassigned to that desk in 1997, what contacts, if any, have there been between her and Judith Miller? Do they know each other, and if so, how well?

I can't help but wonder what a thorough investigation of any contacts and communications between Miller and Valerie Plame would turn up? What would a cross-check of their phone logs show?

This is, of course, speculation on my part, but my hunch is that what we are dealing with is a much larger criminal conspiracy than just Joe Wilson, his wife and a few rogue CIA officials. I believe it involves the active collusion of MSM agents (Miller, Cooper), possibly their employers (NYT, Time), and the rogue elements in the CIA and State Department.

If this scenario, or something along these lines, is correct, then that would definitely explain Miller's determination to tough it out, since she would be entangled in a potential criminal conspiracy. Her salvation is that, if she keeps quiet and no one else cracks, it will probably be impossible to prove anything.

Someone tell me what crime was committed?

A CIA desk jockey abused her office to put her husband in a position to subvert an investigation important to the War on Terror, in order to undermine the credibility of a sitting President. And it worked.

Bush appointed a special prosecutor after the initial firestorm following Wilson's claim in a NYT article that there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and Niger which was closely followed by the "outing" of his wife by a Novak article. Bush did it to quiet critics then but the chickens have come home to roost now. It's merely a matter of who's roof they're roosting on.

It's gone beyond Rathergate because the NY Times is paying hush money to keep their reporter quiet in jail. How many public companies pay hush money to jailed employees?

Good theory and it's what I'm coming to believe. The connection between Plame and Miller is pausible and one I hadn't considered. Thanks for the background.

When Clinton lied the focus of the MSM wasn't that he lied rather it was what a good liar he was.

Which translated to:

We, the MSM&D were great at coving his butt! Everyone knew that he was lying, so he couldn't have been too good!

It's amazing how in both cases the MSM when caught in a lie began acting like politicians who are caught in a similar spot.

The Special Prosecutor just raised the stakes for Miller by threatening criminal charges. She's in now on civil charges. If the criminal charges stick she'll be doing a lot more jail time. She may fold her hand under this pressure and it will be interesting to see how the MSM handles the added charges. If there's a huge outcry from the NYT you'll know the SP is on the right track.

I think what we are witnessing is the MSM trying to show " they still run things". They are currently in their own little war with us...talk radio and the bloggers.

In a way this is like their Battle of the Bulge. They have to win this now. They really stuck their necks out on this and now they will really lose all credibility if they can't get Rove's head.
