3 cited for vandalizing moose(Note: Moose not at Gitmo and not named ROVE)
BENNINGTON BANNER ^ | July 12, 2005 | CLOVER WHITHAM

BENNINGTON -- Another moose has been vandalized, this time in front of Star Electric. Officers from the Bennington Police Department found the Salvador Dali "Sal" moose lying on its side with damaged antlers Monday at about 1:15 a.m.

Three out-of-town men admitted to knocking over the Main Street moose, police said.

Marshall Lacroix, 22, and Tyler Lacroix, 22, both of Hammondsort, N.Y., and Nathan F. Efinger, 23 of Andover, Mass., were issued citations for unlawful mischief and ordered to appear in Bennington District Court on Aug. 22.

One was beheaded

This is the fourth incident of moose vandalism since the festival began in May.

Patty McGuire, head of Moosefest, and Town Clerk Timothy Corcoran both agreed it was an unfortunate event. They hope a message is sent to the public that moose vandalism will not be tolerated.

"I'm sorry the incident happened, but I'm pleased they caught who did it," said Corcoran.

Moosefest Chairman Jerry Kline reiterated the message of zero tolerance, saying harsh penalties will be pursued.

"Tampering with or damaging the moose can be anything from a misdemeanor to a felony because of the value, the artwork," said Kline.

Kline noted that the base value of a single moose is about $2,500, not including the "art value."

Bennington resident Tony Connor painted "Sal" the moose. Connor is a full-time artist and architectural illustrator.

That does seem a rather extreme punishment even for knocking over a Salvador Dali moose.
