ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A prominent U.S.-based Islamic scholar who exhorted his followers after the Sept. 11 attacks to join the Taliban and fight U.S. troops was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.
Ali al-Timimi of Fairfax was convicted in April of soliciting others to levy war against the United States, inducing others to aid the Taliban, and inducing others to use firearms in violation of federal law.
The cleric addressed the court for 10 minutes before his sentencing.
I will not admit guilt nor seek the courts mercy. I do this simply because I am innocent, al-Timimi said.
Prosecutors said the defendant, a native U.S. citizen who has an international following in some Muslim circles, wielded enormous influence among a group of young Muslim men in northern Virginia who played paintball games in 2000 and 2001. Authorities said they were a Virginia jihad network training for holy war around the globe.

Thank God and about time. Freedom of speech does NOT protect sedition. Now can we get that Florida professor to do some time?
To: echoBoomer
Finally, a little justice.

"Freedom of speech does NOT protect sedition."
Yes it does; just not incitement to war or violence. If this guy were preaching peace, love, and rock & roll, he wouldn't have a problem in the world (except perhaps a lack of followers). Instead, he chose to preach that young men should join foreign militaries to kill Americans. So now he goes to jail, forever. Good.

I've heard good things about the justice system in the state of Virginia. Here's another indication that they are superior to neighboring jurisdictions.

A prominent U.S.-based Islamic scholar who exhorted his followers after the Sept. 11 attacks to join the Taliban and fight U.S. troops was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison. It's a good start. But why isn't sedition a capital crime? In other words why aren't we sending this guy go off to his 72 vigins and 27 prepubescent boys and all the alcohol and food he can consume with either chemicals or electricity?

Keep him in solitary confinement, allow his lawyers in only under strict supervision, and don't allow any contact with the outside world.
Better yet, put in him the general prison population and let them know what he did.

Life in prison means nothing if he has access to the outside. Make sure he doesn't have access to computers, and have an interpreter monitor and translate his communications.
I hope he gets a warm "welcome" by fellow inmates.

While I understand the extant jubilation among our posters for the sentence in this particular instance, I have reservations since I believe in the future this same argument may be used against those who would revolt against an increasingly tyrannical government.

The penalty should be death.
If the terrorists do not surrender this tactic, within 20 years, it will be the most common sentence for this behavior worldwide.

Imagine be a guard at that prison being able to sprinkle all of his food and clothing and bedding with small amounts of bacon fat.
Question for all? Isn't regular bathing soap made partially with all kinds of different animal fat? Hmmmmm......

Scary. It's truly scary that there are so many terrorist sympathizers out there. I read a few of the feedback letters and saw one from a British woman whining that her Algerian boyfriend was detained in France. Her letter was posted on the 19th of June. I wonder what she thinks now...after the bombings in London, that is.
Oh wait! Of course it's all President Bush and Prime Minister Blair's fault! Silly me!!

Why should the lives of 60 more innocent civilians matter a twit to her?
