St. Peter today welcomes a Hero, a Patriot, a man of honor, and one whose footsteps I was proud to follow.

The waters are rising today on the strength of many a tear at that magical place where the Severn meets the tide.

I never felt as uncomfortable for a man as I did watching him in that Veep debate with Dan Quayle and Algore. You could tell he was so out of his league you felt sorry for him.

He was a fine American.

Unfortunately, my main memory of him will be that Saturday Night Live skit.

He was a very anti bush at carter's submarine naming a few months back all he did was rail against bush.

He sounded like a he was a du activist.

Perot's big issue in 92 was nafta and clinton was for it anyway but Perot spent his time bashing bush.

That may be true in the world of politics. But when it comes to service to one's country, Stockdale was a Major League All-Star while both Quayle and Al Gore were Little Leaguers.

I'm sorry to hear of Mr. Stockdale's death. America has lost a hero. Rest in peace, good man.

Read his book, "Love and War", then you will have a new vision of him to think about.

Read the full article. He suffered from Alzheimer's disease. I imagine that was even becoming evident when he was running with Perot.

I was surprised when he endorsed Bob Dole in '96 and even appeared with him at the GOP convention. I thought he was a social liberal after his '92 debate performance. He was pro choice unfortunately.

But of course he is to be lauded for his military service to America.

"...but Perot spent his time bashing bush."

And now the story behind the story

Do you know why he spent all his time bashing Bush ... ?

Perot had met with Clinton in 1990 and the deal was struck. Clinton knew he could not win tihout splitting the conservative vote. Hence Perot.

Remember all of the crazy nonsense about Perot dropping out, because "the Democratic Party had healed" itself?. Then he gets back in. This was because Perot was SO popular he might have even beat Clinton !!! So he damages himself enough to remain only a conservative vote splitter.

So what was in this for Perot you ask? ... When Hillary's health care was to be enacted ... all of the federal data processing systems contracts would have been "won" by Perot Systems.

And now you know the story behind the story.

Stockdale told Jim Lehrer in a 2000 interview that his four daughters-in-law would have been livid with him if he were pro-life. Therefore, he supported abortion.

Fourth obit post with "Stockdale" in the easily-searched title.

Admiral Stockdale personified, in deed, the noblest traditions of the U.S. military and this nation.

He is just not to be "lauded," but forever remembered for his courage and unwavering devotion to this nation, the military, and his fellow comrades-in-arms despite barbaric tortures inflicted on him and his fellow prisoners by the North Vietnamese to have him renounce his nation and his comrades-in-arms, which he never did despite what ever came.

As for being "pro-life" he certainly was in the sense that he was willing to sacrifice his life so that others might live - and live with dignity. None of us know his views on abortion, but he was enough of a realist - suffering unspeakable torture is realism of realism - to know that if someone is intent on aborting a child, there are limits on what can be done to prevent it; and it will occur, sad to say.

Just the other day I watched the "best of" Phil Hartman video that includes the bit with Hartman playing Stockdale as Perot (Dana Carvey) tries to ditch him on a country road. Not one of the funnier bits on the video . . .

None of us know his views on abortion

False, he said in the 1992 debates that "a woman owns her body, and she can do as she pleases with it." In a later interview with Jim Lehrer, Stockdale reaffirmed his support for abortion, saying that he agreed with his four "pro-choice" daughters-in-law. No, he like Mr. and Mrs. Perot were strongly in support of abortion.
