Suit vs. Crowe to fly (Russell Crowe's phone-throwing escapade)
NY Daily News ^ | 6/28/05 | WILLIAM SHERMAN

"Cinderella Man" star Russell Crowe is expected to get hammered this week with a massive lawsuit that will provide a blow-by-blow account of his alleged June 6 telephone rage assault against a downtown hotel clerk.

The suit will charge that Crowe hurled a ceramic bowl at Mercer Hotel clerk Nestor (Josh) Estrada after hitting the 28-year-old Brooklyn man in the face with a thrown phone - an attack captured on video, according to sources familiar with the incident.

The bowl shattered against a wall near the clerk's head, according to the sources. After the predawn explosion - witnessed by two other employees at the SoHo hotel - Crowe took a deep bow and assumed a karate stance, the sources said

I LOVE this man as an actor and I share some of his testy nature. Will he walk away from this? If he were a famous black actor or sports figure, yes. Maybe NY likes nailing rich famous white people. Especially foreigners. Remains to be seen.

Wish he hadn't done it, he is too amazing a talent to blow his career on something this dumb...

Seems like both he and Cruise are having melt downs. Cruise was bizarre last night on Leno's show. Really over did the movie plug - it was so obvious he had been told to stick to the movie-I had to stop watching I was embarrased for him.

These Hollywood types are out of control because the media turns them into demigods. I noticed that Hollywood movies are down 16% in attendance this year to last. I hope it's because people are to beginning to just say NO. We are not gonna support the lifestyles and monumental egos of these people any longer.

I am proud to say that I haven't been to nor rented a Hollywood movie in the last six years. I don't even know who this guy is, I don't remember seeing him before. Also, I don't own a television machine. My last one broke in 1993 and I never replaced it. Everything I need to know is here on Free Republic.

Please boycott these idiots, they are all Democrats anyway.

I don't think that being an actor/actress makes you a special 'class' of people. The law is nothing if it does not apply to all in the same way.

Actually, if you have any kind of public notoriety, then you must behave to a higher standard. That is sort of the trade-off you have to expect in return for the super wealthy living you earn on the good-will you cultivate with audiences and the popularity you enjoy with your public.

To put any other construction on the give-and-take relationship actors/actresses have with the ticket-buying public is to demonstrate an incredible gullibility and arrogance. Something tells me that Crowe is not gullible...what's that leave?

In his place, you would have to work out the broken phone problem civilly or endure it and like it. There is no justification for crude and coarse behavior. NONE. PS When's the last time someone threw something at you, hurt you and walked away? How did you like it?

I am in a quasi boycott. I watch little tv. The only movies I seen lately are Haryy Potter and Lord of the rings.

I will watch the last star wars, but on video. That is about it

I don't know why race is an issue here; Crowe did a stupid thing and now you are going to have one rich waiter to worry about. I have a testy attitude also, but when I go nuts, I try to make sure there aint no cameras around.

Talent and maturity don't always come in the same package.

"Talent and maturity don't always come in the same package."

Look at the lives and careers of most actors/actresses and say instead... " talent and maturity RARELY come in the same package".

Used to be, only really successful actors/actresses behaved like this... now any one whose mug is in front of a camera seems to think it is imperative for him/her to behave in the worst possible way. It is almost a contest to see who can be the most outrageous, indecent, coarse, rude, inconsiderate...etc. You get it.

I gotta believe Crowe will settle this. I think the negotiations are well under way. It's a little legal "dance" they're doing now.

"They" may settle the civil charges, but he was arrested and charged with assault. I don't think that just goes away.

Ask Michael Jackson.

Crowe is a bunghole. This isn't the first time he's pulled crap like this and it won't be the last.

A year in the Graybar Hotel might do him some good. Put him in a cell in Sing Sing and we'll see how tough old Russell really is.

I can appreciate someone's artistic talents and not have to agree with their politics.

New York ain't Kalifornia. Crowe isn't a US Citizen. Not as famous as Jackson. Probably not as rich. Jackon still had to go to trial. That's what I expect will happen to Crowe.

Wow. Hey, I love this guy's acting and his movies. But, you can't even make an excuse for this.

Is the guy so egotistical, naive, or whatever that he thinks he can do something criminal, and then it all goes away with an apology? He threatened the guy, and then hurled what amounts to weapons at him, hitting him with one of them, and injuring him.

IMO, the DA ought to prosecute.

The last movie I saw in a theater was Titanic. The one before that was the first Speed movie. Haven't missed much the way I see it. I'd rather read.

There are some good shows on the History channel and on Biography however. I will sit for hours and watch that stuff.
