..................While the country's Latino population grew by an estimated 5.7 million between 2000 and 2004, the number of eligible Latino voters increased during the same years by only 2.1 million. By contrast, the increase of 3.4 million in the white population during that time was paired with a 4 million jump in the number of eligible white voters.
Fry said nearly two-thirds of those new Latino residents were unable to vote because they were either younger than 18 or not U.S. citizens. That demographic conundrum can't be solved in a hurry.
"One out of every two whites voted in 2004, compared to one out of five Latinos,'' he said. "That's a startling difference in representation.''
.........Although the Pew study indicated that President Bush's share of the Latino vote in 2004 was closer to 40 percent than the 44 percent originally shown by national exit polls, that's still a dramatic boost for Republicans. The GOP as recently as 1996 could attract only 21 percent of Hispanic voters to its presidential candidates.
"There's been growing support for Bush across many segments of the Latino community,'' Suro said. "But it may reflect his personal charisma and doesn't necessarily show a long-term realignment" toward Republicans.
The study showed that much of Bush's backing came from Latino Protestants, many of whom are the same type of evangelical voters who supported the president across the country.
"That religious support caught a lot of people by surprise in 2004,'' Pachon said. "In states like New Mexico, Latino evangelicals really got the word out.''
Bush's ability to attract Latinos is likely to boost Republican efforts to woo those voters away from Democrats. But community leaders say the only real route to political power is by registering more Latino voters.

I caught it too, but with a different take on it. What the author means by "solved" is "converted to Democrat votes".
He's also sending the warning, register now, because within a couple of election cycles, these numbers need to be in the Deomcrat column.
Exactly.
"One out of every two whites voted in 2004, compared to one out of five Latinos,'' he said. "That's a startling difference in representation.''
that has got to be one of the most misleading statements I have ever read. EVEN THE WRITER ACKNOWLEDGED that alot of the latinos were kids or illegal.
He may be counting the same people twice because nearly half of all Hispanics call themselves "White".
Basically its pointless to not invite in foreigners because they might vote Democrat. The Democrats will always divide people into groups.. and promise some groups tons of free things.
We can't beat them at that, even as some Republican politicians try.
We need to keep getting out the word of conservative freedom vs Democrat entrapment.
It's always good to question LIBERALS and their figures.
"One out of every two whites voted in 2004, compared to one out of five Latinos,'' he said."
Maybe a lot of them are illegals and can't vote - nunless they vote for Democrats who have "ways" at the polls.
What they are really saying in increase the racial demagoguery, and start making false claims of racism against Latinos.
You've lost me.
Are you posting to the right thread?
Future generations of Europeans, groaning under Islam, will curse their parents and envy America her Christian Latino immigrants.
My wife is an Immigrant from China and a devout Republican. Has to do with being anti-communist. Basically Republican outreach can get to many more people like her if we invest in the time to let them know where we stand. Problem is we let the Dems do this for decades and now Rove and Melman caught on and are doing their best to recruit minorities. Looks like it is working.
The best thing the decent people of America can do is make sure the Democrats continue to get their message out.
Thanks to alternative information sources, notably the internet and talk radio, millions of people are seeing this alliance between the sociopathic and the stupid for what it is. And they are recoiling in disgust.
Good point and well worth pondering.
Another excellent point.
