I guess amatuer radio wasn't part of anyone's 'skill set' either.

And that is a good point today. Perhaps there needs to be some emphasis on amateur radio as a merit badge amongst scouts and their leaders. This weekend is Field Day, and our local club is participating. As part of that, they are demonstrating their emergency operations team, and they invited neighboring scout troops to come and observe and participate. They had one troop show up yesterday, and the boys were all excited.

Think of the possiblities in these kinds of situations if at least one participant is a ham.

Don't know.

Lateset off of Cox.Net National News

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- Dozens of officials and volunteers searched Saturday for a 13-year-old Boy Scout who fell into the fast-moving Yellowstone River.

Luke Sanburg, of Helena, Mont., was pushing logs into the river with other scouts Friday when one of the logs clipped his legs and knocked him into the river. He was last seen floating downstream with his head above water level, the National Park Service said.

Luke and six members of his troop were camping in the northern part of the park, about six miles from Gardiner, Mont., a park gateway. Three adults were with the boys, said Cheryl Matthews, a park spokeswoman.

Saturday's search focused on a 14-mile section of the river between Knowles Falls and a bridge at Corwin Springs, Mont. A team of kayakers was expected to go out on the river Sunday, authorities said.

Sanburg's parents were also helping with the search, Matthews said.

A white tennis shoe, fitting the description of one worn by Luke, was found about five miles downstream from where he entered the river. No other clothing was found, park officials said.

The Yellowstone incident came just days after 11-year-old Scout Brennan Hawkins was found in good condition after spending four days wandering the Utah wilderness.

Prayers up for all involved. I hope they find the scout wet, but ok.

I noticed that too...had to read the sentence twice to make sense out of it. This is the end result of our skools indoctrinating students in their socialist ideals rather than teaching proper English.

And that is a good point today. Perhaps there needs to be some emphasis on amateur radio as a merit badge amongst scouts and their leaders.

I bagged the Radio and Electronics merit badges on the way to Eagle Scout. Having learned Morse code in Scouts, I had my 5 words per minute proficiency overnight. A ham radio merit badge awarded in concert with passing the Technician class exam would be a great approach. It would cost the Scouts little to incorporate it as the ARRL and W5YI organization offer classes and exams.

Spell checkers are cheaper than proofreaders.

But they due not catch semantic problems with words that have too meanings.

A famous computer columnist failed to proofread his work. It went to press with the automatic spell checker inserting the word "copulation" in place of "compilation". The spell checker didn't catch the error, but he sure got an ear full from his readers.

Since code is no longer a requirement it shouldn't be too difficult to get the scouts interested even more. In this instance, perhaps someone with a handheld could have contacted help sooner, especially since there is a repeater in the area. There have been quite a few times when we've contacted someone when the cell phone wouldn't work.

Fresh melted ice is..C,O,L,D... can't last too long in water that cold.. meaning your arms refuse to move.. and your legs too, within a couple minutes.. could be curtains for the boy..

"Sounds like an accident to me. These things happen when you actually let boys start growing up and becoming men."

Yep. That hand holding and diaper changing has to end sometime.

There is always hope that a miracle will occur but there comes a time and it is fast approaching that reality must set in.

Those waters are fast and can cause hypothermia in a very short time. With that if untreated comes unconsciousness and then you just drift off to sleep the sleep of eternity.
