Excerpt from Q & A: Dave Grohl
By: Andrew Beaujon
June 24, 2005
Q: I've read that the title of your new album is a tribute to John Kerry.
A: A few of the songs were written when I came home from the campaign trail. Every day, before he got up to speak, I'd go play acoustic music. And the audiences weren't Foo Fighters audiences. The front row was World War II veterans and teacher's unions and blue-collar workers. I came back from that so inspired by the people and the real emotion and the feeling of a small community all coming together for an honorable reason. That's where the title came from.
Q: Were you crushed after the election?
A: F*&#, yes. I wanted to riot. But rather than write an angry Rage Against the Machine record, I wanted to give a sense of hope and release and faith. One of the reasons I did that with the Kerry campaign was because I was personally offended that George Bush was using [the Foo Fighters'] "Times Like These" at his campaign rallies. We were trying to think of a way to get him to stop. "#%$*, man, I'm gonna send the president a cease and desist order." I wrote that f*&$-ing song. I know what I'm singing about, and it basically mirrored what John Kerry's campaign was trying to represent.
....for a dishonorable man.
Oh, the irony!!
RUSH often wrote politically subversive music but never named names, leaving the listener free to interpret. When artists start spelling out in detail every grievance it's a turnoff, at least to me.
BooHooHoo Fighter.
Heaven forbid that some do something like blow up the Twin Towers. This self absorbed guy might have a hissy fit. This country is losing it's sense of perspective.
Wasn't he on "Rhoda"?
I wish Senator Durbin's "nazi" speech had been given by Kerry....it would have been so fitting.
Now we have a 2005 version of Kerry = Durbin.
The perfect song for Bush's Victory Party: Pearl Jam's "I'm Still Alive"
PJ was as anti-Bush as any group out there.
(And of course, the Bush campaign should have only played a downloaded copy of the song, so the "artists" would not profit in any way.)
Grohl do you not realize that socialists have killed more poor people than all the wars combined? They need you in "times like these."
That's exactly what I was thinking! Not sure if this is the same one - but I believe the name is the same.
It's his song, and I can't blame him if he doesn't want it being used for a campaign he doesn't support.
SPIN is good for lots are gnashing of teeth and wailing from Bush-hating musicians, but if I want to read them complaining about right-wingers using their songs, I'd read the latest Springsteen interview in Rolling Stone.
Wasn't some black musical group offended that Bob Dole's campaign turned the song "I'm a Soul Man" into "I'm a Dole Man"?
Anyway, as long as the group is getting royalties paid to them, how can they legally object?
I think that Crissy Hynde probably objects to Rush Limbaugh using her song for the intro to his show.
But too bad.
The Poo Poo Lighters?
Dave, shut up and play yer guitar! Better yet, shut up and put down yer guitar and go sit behind the drum kit! You're one of the best drummers in rock & roll!
Grohl thinks Kerry is worth a tribute? Maybe he should stick to fighting foo.
Durbin forgot Jenjis Khan!
what the hell is, exactly, a Foo Fighter?
I doubt I have ever listened to any one of their songs. I KNOWINGLY haven't.
Who knows.
And whats a Limp Bizkit?
LOL
well from the slang I know, it is ummm...well it is a soft ummmm...LOL....
I also was thinking that, but actually the actor on "Rhoda" was David Groh (without the "l"). Hadn't thought about him in a long time -- Joe Gerard was his name on the show, right?
World War II-era Allied fighter pilot slang for a particular type of UFO observed over Europe and believed to be a top-secret German weapon.
I don't know much about Limp Bizkits.
I am a *hard* rocker.
I like the Foo Fighters music. Grohl has amazing control of his voice in terms of the scream sing method. He also never learned how to read music and plays by ear.
With the said, its a shame he has decided to join a campaign soley based (from what I read in this article) on the reason that Bush used one of his songs.
What a lame reason to cut 50% of your audience.
Once again, my tag line is proven beyond a doubt (Grohl is a very talented musician, IMO).
In 1944-45, the term `foo fighters' [FF] was in use by radar operators for the kind of mysterious or spurious trace that would later be called a UFO
DAMN, I love the Foo Fighters. Plus Dave Grohl seems like such a cool guy. This sucks.
On which day?
LOL
well their first CD had promise, especially the song Faith, but then they showed themselves to be a man band and thats about it.....
Maybe he should rename the album to: "Hopeless Muddle."
I wasn't referring to a legal objection --- no doubt he has none. But in real world ethics, his objections are reasonable --- I'd be pissed too if Kerry was making use of a song I made.

That was David Groh...
If it has to be loud to be good, it isn't good- George Martin.
Pathetic, isn't it?
It sure is. I think rock stars need handlers to keep them from doing these kinds of lame things.
Hard to believe Cobain was the smart one.
They just have no clue that some of their own fans might have a different point of view.
There was no smart one.

Tragic. I really love his acoustic version of "Times Like These." Thanks for posting this. I will never buy anymore of his music . F 'em.
I've seen FF three times in concert. Sorry, Dave, you lost me buddy.
"DAMN, I love the Foo Fighters. Plus Dave Grohl seems like such a cool guy. This sucks."
When will they ever just shut up and sing?
How about a cover of Beck's "Loser Baby"?
Don't think so.. He was drummer for Nirvana before Kurt Cobain died... I used to like the Foo Fighters but reading that made me want to barf... Well no worse than Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam front man) open letter to Clinton concerning the shooting of (baby killer) David Gunn, as shown on the inner cover of Vitalogy...
these highly political albums they make suck! the first two albums by the Foo Fighters were awesome, and so was Ten and Vs for Pearl Jam. Vitalogy stunk to high heaven, and they learned there lesson by the time they came out with Yield and No Code, although they were still a truncated mirror of their former self.
btw, anyone like Velvet Underground?
I just wish G. Gordon Liddy still used the Miami Vice theme for the opening for his show...
