Let me suggest another, though, that I just got: "The Confederate States of America: What Might Have Been," by Roger Ransom. I know RR from my days at UCSB, when he would do seminars (he was at UC Riverside). He was the doctoral advisor to one of my co-authors on a previous book, and I look forward to reading this one.
