FR Book Club: What's on your Summer Reading List?
June 17, 2005

Posted on 06/17/2005 10:47:19 AM PDT by Tanniker Smith

The Free Republic Book Club is an informal gathering of readers and lovers of all genre of books, which meets on an irregular basis (whenever I remember to post and have a copy of the ping list available.)

If you would like to be on this ping list, please send me mail and I'll include you. If you wish to be removed, please send mail. If you already sent me mail wishing to be removed and you were pinged anyway, oops, my apologies, please request again (sorry about that).

Today's topic: what's on your summer reading list? Whether you are going on vacation, sitting on the beach or just hanging out on your front porch, there's usually a good novel nearby. Any particular plans or will it be a more serendipitous approach?

Oh dang! No wonder he stopped writing. That is sad. He probably won't do any more then.

Gates of Fire, an epic novel of the Battle of Thermopolae

I read that in the wake of the film "Gladiator" in 2000. The same author also wrote another novel on ancient Greece. Both came out on audiobook, read by Derek Jacobi, the British actor who played "I, Claudius" and also acted in Gladiator.

I pass my books on to others, so I'd have to do research on amazon.com to get the author's name and book titles.

2. Les Miserables - Victor Hugo, because I performed in the play

3. The Reformation - Diarmaid MacCulloch, very informative

4. a Spanish textbook - gotta learn something new

5. How Green Was My Valley - Llewellyn, suggested to me

"a Spanish textbook - gotta learn something new "

I will learn something else.

"The Bible - cover to cover. How can you go wrong?"

You can't.

"East of Eden - by John Steinbeck, an incredible read "

That book was strange, but good.

Really looking forward to Jack Thompson's Out of Harm's Way, which releases in November.

Also, George Barna's Revolution, about why so many committed, born-again Christians are exiting the established church in massive numbers.

I get a lot of audio books. I always have one going in the car. Right now, I am listening to 'Persecution' by David Limbaugh. It is scary!

George Barna's Revolution

I was browsing thru that in Border's. It's a good read.

I'm also reading the paperback book "Cinderella Man", a retelling of the current Russell Crowe film about Depression-era boxer Jim Braddock fighting Max Baer.

Ohhhhhh....I love her! I reread her books every year. I added this book to my Amazon wish list. Is it an easy read? I have a hard time with critiques sometimes, because they are so dry. TIA
