Clearwater, Fla. - A former sheriff received six months of probation, a $600 fine and community service after he was convicted of trying to enter Terri Schiavo's hospice to give her water.
Former Lee County Sheriff John J. McDougall, an outspoken Roman Catholic, was arrested March 19 outside the hospice the day after Schiavo's feeding tube was removed.
McDougall, 62, could have avoided court . . .

He should volunteer to bring water to Hospice patients.
I wonder if we could start up a collection for the guy to raise $600 here on FR......
I'd chip in.
Count me in.
me too
Be careful what you demand.
I'm in
It might be that I'm getting old and the world has passed me by. Let's see if I get this? The guy was arrested because he was doing his Christian duty as he saw it? And this happened, where...in America? He was giving water to a woman that the government said may no longer have any? That the government said... must die?
Why? Because her husband, living with another woman, no longer felt it advisable FOR THE INJURED WOMAN'S PARENTS to keep her alive? And the man wanting to give her water was arrested and convicted? In what country did this happen? When? Not Germany, 1939? But America, 2005.
WE ARE IN A LOT OF TROUBLE.
What a travesty.
Why did this story have to be linked - it was only 3 paragraphs. What a pain!
Actually, 5 paragraphs, each about 1 sentence long. So, in reality, 6 sentences. And it had to be linked???
I am sorry to hear that he was fined for his conduct, but one day he will be rewarded for attempting to give water to the thirsty.
Surprised this story even made it onto FR.
Usually, just having "sfgate" in the URL is enough to keep you from being able to get the article posted. The admin. moderator must've been asleep at the switch.
The water via mouth would have choked her to death and he would be up on manslaughter charges.
Rules is rules!
I try to follow the rules, and in return, Jim and his moderators let me keep posting.
I'm in.
Exactly. Those nutcases ringing the hospice and demanding access to take her water (and a burger w/fries) would have killed her if they'd had their way. I guess to some, death by a stupid but compassionate act is far more acceptable than a person who states a desire not to have their life prolonged by artificial means.
With all the laws the widower Michael Schiavo has broken, he did not even get one hour of community service. BTW, is Mike still with his mistress Jodi?
Michael Jackson was given a total pass. But then he is a rich celebrity and only harmed a kid who had a terrible mother.
Count me in.
And who was that?
He knew he was going to get arrested. He knew he was going to get fined or jailed, or both. But good street theatre. I'm in on principle. FReepmail me if you're collecting.
Oh yes, such a horrid criminal. Trying to give water to a woman dying of thirst. Better to spend time and money convicting this guy than on child molesters or murderers.
Depends on how it was given to her. Terri was swallowing her own saliva. She could have handled an eye dropper full at a time.
Choking to death would have been far more merciful than dehydrating/starving her to death.
I don't mind collecting, especially if we can do it through PayPal. Let's see if we can get at least 20 people to agree and then I'll start an actual collection.
Anyone want to ping the prolife or Terri lists? All we need is 30 people good for $20 to raise the $600 this good man was fined (obviously smaller amounts would work too, but I'd like to wait until we have 20 people on board before embarking we're at 7 counting me.)
Make it eight.
Sure. You can tell that after the fact from an autopsy report after the victim went through weeks of dehydration. I'm sure that the autopsy report also explains how she swallowed her own saliva and did not drool. You mean it doesn't? Well, how about that...
... and people would be blaming it on Judge Greer somehow, or claiming that Mr. Schiavo had put him up to it.
I'm curious as to whether you could name a couple. Citations to the Florida or United States statutes would help.
I've got a $20.00 spot for this man.
A hero.

What? Nevermind. giving her water orally would have drowned her. She did not have the ability to intake food and water, hence the feeding tube.
I'm in too.
Even patients unable to swallow without choking can usually tolerate a wet cloth in their mouth.
This would not do nearly enough to rehydrate her.
Saundra, did you know Terri personally? I'm asking because I just noticed your sig line.
Alright everyone we need to call it quits. My bad. This kind of thing is against FR rules. Henceforth, email me at elkgrovedan@yahoo.com about this.
No more such discussion on this thread please.
"community service
He should volunteer to bring water to Hospice patients."
GREAT idea!!
You might be careful. Terri Schiavo had more brains than you for such a remark. But if we got rid of everyone with 1/2 a brain (so says the coroner), well, as John Lenon said, "Imagine".
Add me to the $20 list. Paypal would be nice.
God bless this man.
Well that's justice in Pinellas County!
You can count me in for $20.
Please, this is not the place or time for sane, rational discussion.
"Plants" don't plead for water or call for their mothers, pal.
No they don't....
