Canyon County Commissioner and anti-immigration pundit Robert Vasquez announced on June 10 his intention to run for Butch Otter's soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Congressional seat, joining a small handful of Republicans who have expressed interest in the position. The difference between Vasquez and these others is that he only speaks about a single issue: illegal aliens. Most recently, he strong-armed Canyon County into hiring a lawyer to pursue litigation of any businesses found to employ immigrants, although Vasquez prefers different terminology. As he told the Idaho Press-Tribune earlier this year, "That would be like saying Hitler's army marching into Poland was merely "immigrating'".
Can a candiddate run a congressional campaign based solely on an issue as divisive and difficult as immigration reform? Vasquez thinks so; after all, he porttrayed his reason for running, in a June 10 press release, as "Those previously announced candidates lack any real commitment to America's language, borders and culture."
Fellow candidate and Idaho Legislature nine-termer Sheila Sorenson believes that Vasquez needs to branch out to beat her and the other contenders. " I understand his passion for the illegal immigration problem, and believe that the issue requires serious attention," she said after Vasquez announced his candidacy. "However, Idahoans are concerned about many other issues."
Whether we, as voters, really care about more than migrant labor reform will be clear next year. What is already clear, however, is that Vasquez will continue to generate a quote a minute about what is wrong with those who are not fond of his isolationist jingoisn - like he did on CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight on June 9, a day before announcing his candidacy.
"Those that are opposed to me are the people that are hiring the illegal aliens, profiting from the exploitation of their labor, and passing on the costs of those individuals to their fellow taxpayers," he said.
Wow, that's the actual title.
I'd've bet anything it was Scrappleface.
So Vasquez, a hispanic, is a xenophobe for speaking out against hispanics invading this nation. I thought I'd heard about all the absurd comments that could be made concerning illegal immigration.
Could he have protected Idaho better by running for Governor? Seems maybe that would have been better for them.
I wish he would take Butch Napolitano's job instead.
"he only speaks about a single issue: illegal aliens."
To those who are truly paying attention, it's issue enough.
The media still sees illegal immigration as no big deal. It will take a major city getting blown off the map, or a major TB or AIDS epidemic to shake them out of their complacency.
probably wore out the keys needed to spell racist, facist, nazi
Thinking of you...
-ping-
I don't know if a Governor can really do anything in this matter (irregardless of that horrible HBO movie which had a similar plot)
One thing I wanna know, how is it that Boise has been growing as much as it has.
"Those that are opposed to me are the people that are hiring the illegal aliens, profiting from the exploitation of their labor, and passing on the costs of those individuals to their fellow taxpayers," he said.
How the heck does that statement qualify as "isolationist jingoism"? Perhaps the reporter just learned the term and was itching to use it...?
What a headline! No hidden agenda there, no sirree Bob!
Mine too, and hopefully millions of others. THE EXISTING CAREER POLITICIANS NEED TO BE REPLACED!
Go Vasquez!, from one Local Xenophobe to another.
Local Xenophobe wants National Power
Boise Weekly ^ | 6/15/2005 | Nicholas Collias
These are not the flaming liberals you are looking for.
Move along.
And the problem is??
I hope he wins, I hope he wins, I hope he wins!
Keep us posted on this guy! I love him, a politician standing up for what's good for America! So rare these days.
Translation
I understand that you silly bumpkins in the general sheepulation have some quaint notion that there is still an American culture so me and my fellow professional commissars will continue to pay lip service to this issue while continuing to do every thing we can to expand illegal immigration.
Spoken like a true 9 term politician. Such passion.
Thanks, I do my best. Unfortunately, I've just learned to read between the lines when ever these creatures speak. I say unfortunately because I'm sure I'd sleep better if I couldn't.
I should clarify that post was directed toward Shiela Sorenson, lifetime hack, I presume.
I understand. So was mine. I'm just glad you appreciated my post.
Xenophobe? Just because he wants to end illegal immigration?
Some great journalism there.
No, not much difference at all these days. You're right.
What a convenient, and incorrect, choice of words. This should be "pursue litigation of any businesses found to employ illegal immigrants". And it's not the only such incorrect verbage (lie) in this article.
Only so much can be explained by sloppy journalism. This looks more like a bald faced attempt to mislead. In other words, a lie. Sloppy journalism or not, however, whether he's lazy, incompetent, or actualy dishonest, the Boise Weekly should know better than to employ hacks like Nicholas Collias.
I suggest a few people from Idaho need to contact the Boise Weekly and remind them of their duty to the truth, and that employing Nicholas Collias does not serve well that duty.
And the problem is??
The problem is that the author of this tripe deliberately fails distinguish between all immigrants, and the illegal ones. I doubt there are any statutes to litigate businesses under for the hiring of LEGAL immigrants.
Okay; I'll concede that one. He used a poor choice of words.
Looks like some 'journalists' aren't even trying to cover their bias anymore...
But he pretends to be a Journalist. Words are supposed to be his business. And his choice of words here was undoubtedly intentional.
He didn't use a poor choice of words. He Lied.
You're probably right. It's been a long day. I missed it in the first read.
I guess the title should've been a dead giveaway.

Nicholas Collias is sending his biased and wrong message to its readers.
I wouldn't bother contacting the author. Instead, contact the paper's publisher:
Sally Barnes
sally@boiseweekly.com
Better yet, contact their advertisers. I haven't seen a print edition, but I'm sure someone out there in Idaho can get a list of who has ads with them.
Good ideas. Thanks!
That may be the official fib in Idaho. In these parts. a more realistic number is 85% or higher.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
This one's FREE !
That's slander in my dictionary...
Oh yeah, and all we're supposedly "growing" is multi-million dollar housing.
The PennySaver is free? New one on me.
Best thing you can do is buy a bird needing a cage and liner.
