PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - A moderate earthquake shook most of Southern California early Sunday, rattling nerves along with homes and businesses. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage, authorities said.

The magnitude-5.6 quake struck about 8:40 a.m. and was centered 20 miles south of Palm Springs, according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey. Dozens of smaller temblors were registered within minutes of the quake, authorities said.

Nadege Gelayen, assistant manager of Cafe des Beaux-Arts, a restaurant in nearby Palm Desert, said the quake lasted six to seven seconds and shook doors and plates.

"Nothing was broken. But it was pretty scary. It was a big one," Gelayen said.

Some visitors were rustled at the Terra Cotta Inn Resort & Spa, a clothing optional resort in Palm Springs. Windows rattled, but no damage was reported.

"People from outside of California seemed to like it better," owner Mary Clare Mulhall said. "They were excited and calling their relatives. People from California were just shouting out numbers."

The quake was felt as far west as Los Angeles and as far south as San Diego, 75 miles southwest of Palm Springs. It also was reported to be felt as far east as Arizona, according to messages sent to the Web site of seismologists at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

A dispatcher with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said she received dozens of calls about the quake but hadn't received any word about injuries or damage. In Los Angeles County, there also were no reports of damage.

The California Highway Patrol reported several small rock slides on Highway 74, but no reports of accidents or serious damage.

The quake occurred in a mountainous area within the San Jacinto fault zone. The zone produces quakes in the magnitude 2-3 range all the time, said Kate Hutton, a staff seismologist at the California Institute of Technology.

See the 5.9 at the antipode?
1) You have an amazingly liberal definition of "antipode" 2) There are 4 quakes of Mag 5+ worldwide daily...so... 3) Who cares? It's meaningless.

I felt it here in Long Beach. It was like bumpy ride, LOL. No damage and I am happy to report my family, myself and my home and car are all safe and accounted for. Welcome to Earthquake Country, LOL.
