My wife and I have 2 year old twins. My wife quit her job and we don't do daycare. Trust me, it sucks on an income level. We're not rich. But the girls are better off this way, and that's what matters.

We share your opinion that day cares are vastly overated and usually a crutch for parents who don't want to raise their own kids.

If somebody did this to one of my babies... the world wouldn't be big enough to hide from me.

Like you said,
something doesn't wash here....

Maybe one parent thought the other parent picked the kid up...still, someone wasn't paying attention.

Or worse case--- there was another young sibling at home responsible because both parents work very, very late--- who didn't alert the parents that the toddler didn't make it home.

Whatever, a 5 hour gap makes no sense whatsoever.

Remember, this guy took on a professional driving gig. And more he took on the responsibility of care giver for those children and delivering them home. This is a much bigger liability and than an acquaintance who forgets her neighbor's sleeping infant.

It's very interesting the parents didn't alert for five hours. Who takes care of the child when it's dropped off at home. A 3 yr old is WAY too young to leave alone at home. For me, a half hour late would cause concern, and hour goes by and I'm on the phone to the authorities and day care center asking where the hell is my child??

There's already such an invention. It's called "eyes."

I developed a "system" which could be retrofitted to all vehicles. It could be priced in the $29.95 range. If states would mandidate that day cares have my "Guardian"(R)(C) then there would be a market for over 10 million cars, (preliminary estimate). It could be manufactured in China for under 5 bucks and sold through SAM'S, WalMart, Pep Boys etc automotive centers. A car insurance rebate and other incentives, including no child left behind tax credits could make this a Ron Popiel-like infomercial HIT!

But I could find no takers!

Very witty. "Eyes" sometimes don't help us out on the highway, which is why we have seat belts and other safety features.

Of course common sense should rule in the world, but sometimes it doesn't. I just made a casual suggestion.

People won't leave a $5 bill on the seat of their car for 5 minutes, yet leave young people unattended in cars for much longer than that. Sickening.

""but van driver Rancocas Foreman skipped the boy's stop, went home and parked and locked the van before leaving for his second job, authorities said."

Be careful what you say!

Rancocas Foreman has a Big Brother named GEORGE!

Looks like a good place for an aftermarket add on. Although I cannot imagine what type of sensor to use.

"Day care" is an abomination and a misnomer.

Very little "caring" goes on in these institutions, even in the "quality" ones.

Parents who dump their children in "daycare" either do not love them, or are deluded by our feminized/collectivist culture into thinking that it's OK, or more ludicrously, even good for children.

And don't anybody bother giving me that cr*p that "sometimes it's necessary." It never is. Where there's a will, there's a way and a loving parent will move heaven and earth before abandoning a child to the jungle that is daycare.

First degree murder is the deliberate killing of someone. That is not what happened here. This does not mean I would not want to kill the sob had it happened to mine but it never would have since there is no way I would allow them to be bused at that age (or any age actually.)

No doubt about it. Five hours in itself is bordering upon child neglect. Five minutes would have been enough to get my wife in an uproar. What a horrible thing.

And here in RI, day care workers are trying to get Unionized!

Of course they are! They see the gravy train the teachers and municipal employess are on, and they want some of it!

I worked in a Day Care Center while I was going to college. That, alone, convinced me I'd never go to work and leave my kids at a place like that. Even in the one where I worked, which was clean, and the kids were well treated, they were still like cattle, and with infrequent exceptions, you could not treat them as individuals; they were just part of a group.

The longest I ever left any of my kids at a small Church or home day care was for maybe 3 hours, once every couple of weeks, when I'd go shopping.

Personally, I would be afraid to work any job involving children. One mistake and its off to prison.

Day care centers need to realize they are (supposed to be) caring for priceless treasures. When you hire cheap help to save a buck, you get cheap results.

People need to start realizing that if they go ahead and have children when they're not in a position to raise them properly, they'll end up having to dump the children in whatever day-dump they can afford. Day care centers provide exactly what their customers demand -- which in most cases is a dirt-cheap place to dump their children that they had no business having in the first place.
