Let's see..

Gov mandates much better mileage..
Mfgr. make smaller lighter ( plastic) cars.

Lighter cars cause more injuries..
Gov. mandates air bags.

Air bags cause children in the front seat fatal injuries so..
Gov. mandates children ride in the back, backwards.

Parents can't see kids and forget they are there.

Did I forget a step?

I'm not absolving parents of their responsibility, just pointing out the Gov. role in these tragedies.

It's no wonder so may grow up well-versed in "groupthink" and can't make decisions without running to someone else.

I actually had friends tell me that I should put our younger two in pre-school before Kindergarten so they could learn about 'circle time'. I just laughed and said I thought my kids were smart enough to get the hang of it when they started Kindergarten a year later. Sheesh. Folks who otherwise are perfectly able to be home with their kids, just seem like they can't WAIT to get rid of them! Drives me nuts, sometimes, especially when they act like I'm wasting my life being a stay at home mom.

Car manufacturers need to....Build cars.

This childs death falls squarly on the shoulders of a 'PERSON'.

Prayers to the family.

You did not read my post,

I did not blame the death of this child on any car manufacturer.

I said that like seatbelts etc. some safety features could alert people if they left their kid in their car.

Sometimes I wonder if all that parents do, in the sense of daycares, preschools, smart start, 4year old kindergarten, etc. and then extended care times in the evenings, sports tutoring, after school care and latch key kids (I was one of those) if folks have just lost a 'sense' of their kids?

My daughter is with me all the time. I KNOW where she is in the car, I talk to her (even when she couldn't talk back to me), sing to her, point stuff out. There is NO way I would get out of the car and 'forget' her.

I think some parents are selectively 'forgetting' that they decided to leave their kids in the car. How do you forget the little person in the backseat?!

Sorry to rant off on you. Does it not seem odd to you that parents would forget their kids? Look how concientious you are about your pet.

Are you reading and listening to what you're saying???

Car manufacturers should make a safety device to prevent people from accidentally leaving their children to die while strapped in a safety seat in a hot car?

Well, we made a law that said people MUST strap their children into a car seat before they drive so that they could survive a crash. Now we have dead kids.

So naturally lets make more safety devices to keep kids safe from those safety devices.

How about we start neutering and spaying idiot humans and have a minimal intelligence requirement for child care.

You have an anger problem, looking for blame and who you can hammer on. I don't appreciate your attitude.

The situation was tragic. Of course the man who did not check for the child is at fault.

I also said I wish car manufacturers would create a safety device/system to remind people they've left their kid in the car. It would not prevent all of these situations but it might help, and I stand by my comments.

And I said that was an unreasoned suggestion. We all know what you said. You're the one doing the hammering, again and again with the same statement. You can wish all day for a miracle cure, but you can't force car manufacturers to rescue you from being stupid. Deal with it.

Or maybe you're one of those who also think gun manufacturers should make safer guns too??

Look, you either have never had kids, or you are senile! I cannot imagine any person who "forgets" they have a child in the back seat of a car! If hot weather makes you 'stupid', move to a cold weather climate. I doubt it would make a difference with some people............. then the child could freeze to death!

I actually can see it as a selling point to those moms and dads that buy the cars that have all of the child amenities that can be optional. Like DVD's, coolers in the floors, and removable seating. They are presented as the answer to the busy families lifestyle. Both of our cars have the child safety lock and we have used them to prevent 'get aways' when our daughter first learned to undo her safety seat seatbelts.

"The child was clearly visible from the driver's seat," with his legs dangling in the aisle, Hastings said.

Marcellus was to have been dropped off first on Foreman's route, but Foreman had trouble making a left turn from a busy street and went on to his next stop and did not return, Hastings said.

(snip)

Hastings said he had no explanation for why there was about a five-hour gap between the time the boy was to have been dropped off and police being called.

There are a couple of dogs here that just don't hunt.

I suppose it is possible that the kid was asleep in the van, but I can't believe he didn't raise a ruckus upon finding he was locked in and alone.

The 5 hour delay in calling the cops raises a flag, too. I'd have been moving mountains trying to find my child if they were even 20 minutes late.

The van might get darned hot, but fatal in 5 hours? I think an autopsy is probably in order.

Wouldn't your average car alarm go off if a kid was moving around inside?

Carbon Monoxide is a byproduct of the combustion of motor fuels. Carbon Dioxide is the gas exhaled by humans as a byproduct of respiration.

Imho, a simple car alarm should be enough to alert people to movement in the vehicle.

Stick to your guns SusiQ!

You are making an investment that will pay off in dividends money can't measure.

It would if the temperature were either very high or very low. As for the hailstorm, the temperature would likely be within some sort of acceptible temperature range.

I was referring to the noise and movement setup which would open the windows and turn on the fans.... and fill the car with hail and rain...Most hailstorms in these parts happen as the vanguard of a severe thunderstorm cell, and usually on a hot day.

Ultimately, there is no substitute for paying attention (situational awareness).

This tragedy is the talk of the town. Most everyone is asking why the Mother waited till 8pm to report her child didn't arrive home, when he was supposed to be home at 3pm?

The poor little kid had two people who neglected him that day.
