Besides I don't look like my mom.

To some degree, you do! Trust me. (And I've never even seen you.) But remember, we're not talking about whether children actually end up looking their parents, but whether the desire by a certain sector of the population to have children that look similar to themselves is racist, not in itself, but because of the sector that these people represent, namely the blue-eyed sector.

I would say the same thing about black people or anyone else. Why is blonde, blye eyed considered to be the epitome of perfection? That's what I'm taking about. I'm not taking about people wanting babies that look like themselves.

Besides you need to look into the history of the Nazi movement and then you'd understand why people make that association.

Besides I don't look like my mom. That idea that a child must look like their parent is a myth.

Maybe not now, but look in the mirror in about 20 years or so. :)

Just doing my job, spreading evil thoughts about.

He's in law school. Being in law school at 28 is not that rare.

What they have in Europe is a system where the state pays for your education, but you have to be "selected" into the system for that to happen.

Many folks who would be pushed through the system and helped out with student loans in the US end up spending extra years getting their educations because they get "de-selected" from the preferred tracks and have to work full time jobs with only part time study, usually on a 6 months work/6 months study approach, or a variation depending on the field of study and the country.

I've known several people who got caught in that trap, but unless their English was sufficient to attend a UK or US/Canadian college, they were stuck with the work/qualify/study system that seems to have become the norm on the Continent.

It's not that the European system of higher education totally rejects folks based on an IQ test the way they did decades ago ~ rather, they still target people to get a more career oriented education by de-selecting them from the higher tracks.

I doubt the Europeans will ever think it appropriate for ordinary people to try to get through any sort of college program in 4 years.

No doubt there are other Freepers who know much more of this than I do ~ I'm just reflecting on the situations of people I know.

I would say the same thing about black people or anyone else.

Would you really? I have my doubts. It is common practice for sperm banks to provide detailed donor info to include ethnicity, hair color, eye color and even education level. Customers use this information in selecting a donor, most usually one of similar ethnicity to themselves. This is common knowledge and has been going on for years. But now, God forbid, a company specializes in offering the same choice to people of Scandinavian ethnicity, not surprisingly, because it is located in a Scandinavian country, and suddenly people like you are bandying about words like racist, eugenics and Nazi. There is something very wrong with this.

Unless you have met with and talked to users of the service mentioned in the article, your assumption that they are trying to create a "perfect" child, instead of simply having a child somewhat similar to themselves is completely unwarranted. Besides, logic is against you. Anyone not starting out with blond hair and blue eyes, but trying to have a child with blond hair and blue eyes by using this service would probably be wasting their money. Not that it's not possible, but just not very likely. On the other hand, anyone with these characteristics has just as much right to a similar donor as a Japanese woman does to a Japanese donor, or a Jewish woman to a Jewish donor. The only difference is that it's not politically correct to object in such cases.

I don't know about "perfection" but they certainly can be strikingly beautiful.
(I'm a brown-eyed brunette, btw.)

"Why is blonde, blye eyed considered to be the epitome of perfection?"

Because it is wanted so by God and therefore it IS.

Yes I would but that's not the topic of this thread. I just don't understand why you are confused as to why people would think eugenics reading this story.

Blue eyes and blonde hair are genetically recessive traits. Perhaps it's human nature to value what is rare.

FWIW, my blue-eyed blonde mother always praised her herd of "Heinz 57" grandchildren (that's what she called 'em) as "the most gorgeous"...and only one of those 12 got her blue eyes and blonde hair.

I've already answered that question as many ways as possible. I don't think I can make it any simpler.

Let me put it this way. Instead of Scandinavia, if the article had been about an Israeli company offering Jewish sperm, would you be making such a fuss???

Yes I would. Artificial insemination is abhorrent to me and more importantly abhorrent to God and the Catholic Church.

That's fine but as a practice I'm against IVF period anyway. What about adoption?

I'm against IVF too, but I can understand why a person would want a biological child. First, God instructed Adam and Eve to be fruitful, so the moral law itself points the way toward having biological children. Second, it's natural law that we want to leave offspring; all species want to reproduce. Third, there are very few things of value that we'll leave in the world (since most of us are not George Washingtons) that will not crumble into dust eventually; our genetic traits, when passed on to children, will live on in the world.
