Thank you for the alert.
Once spent several days in Hays, Kansas for a wedding. I don't think there was a day that went by during that period that there weren't tornado warnings.
Where I live now -- very hilly -- we get microbursts a lot more freqently. Not considered a tornado, but still not a whole lot of fun. We have had tornados, but they are exceptionally rare. Mostly our damage comes from lightning and flash flooding.
And everyone in that area has my prayers they come through it all fine.
Please take a moment to look at this map, to see if you are at risk of thess very serious storms making it's way through the heartland.
Also send this to your email friends and family to make sure they are not caught in the storm.
Please take care to secure items, bring in the pets and have a radio for information if the power is out.
I just checked good time to check batteries.
I certainly am not trying to nag about this but as a former Air Force Forecaster I can tell you with certainty this can be very dangerous.

The wife flew to KC today to go shopping at Nel Hills in Atchison. I told her to take an umbrella! Watching these reports with interest.
When it gets perfectly still and it looks yellow outside, you better head underground!
Thank you for adding that to this thread I suppose I am a bit anxious to get the maps out and the most recent offering from the SPC.
You might take a look at the previous comment and the maps.
Actually as an AF brat and former AF and now married to a fine Army hunk we happen to move to some of the more how shall I say it, severe weather areas.
While in Lawton we had a tornado hit it was miserable. If I recall, a few years back the Leavenworth area was hit with a Tornado, if anyone has the 411 on that please add it to the thread.
Have to add one thing, the alerts in Kansas are far better than in Oklahoma. While in OK we had 2 sirens in our area we have 4 here in Kansas.
Folks should heed your advice when it looks as you said outside.
Thanks for the comment, friend.
I will try and stay on top of the alerts for you in the area and post them onto FR.
Which incidentally is another good use of FR, not only do we have excellent debate but we can also help out one another when events like severe weather occur.
Thanks, but I'm out in Virginia near the ocean. Y'll in the heartland, keep heads down and take care.
Excellent graphic GRRRRR thank you!
BTW, I have lived in KS my whole life, and I have never had any damage done by a tornado. Have seen some pretty creepy weather, though.
Well, Virginia has had it's fair share of bad weather, I am from the Reston VA area but nothing like residing in Tornado Alley.
I had not put it on the kansas board, would like you to add it?
Good to know you have stayed safe in previous bad weather events.
I frankly think it is a hit or miss deal. All one can do is to be prepaired and have a place to wait out a bad storm and frankly have a common contact should folks get seperated so folks can call and touch base with their loved one's and friends.
This alert is not given lightly. Actually it is very rare that SPC goes out and gives this weather information.

groovy
I've got an unusual contingency plan for a tornado. If I see one coming, I plan to jump into the pond next to my house and swim to the bottom right as the tornado as approaching. I figure I can hold my breath easily for a minute, by which time the tornado will be gone. And I've never heard of tornados sucking all the water out of ponds.
It's up. Thanks for the thread.
Wow LOL! I hope not for your sake!!! Isn't weather fascinating? I don't live in the areas where these tornadoes are supposed to be, but its fun watching them develop.
I've lived in KS my entire life too teeny, only damage I've had was the roof taken off our house! :)
Thanks for the heads up...we're in Ohio. I keep checkin' the weatherbug, cuz my 'animal instincts' have me restless and grumpy. And that usually happens before a whopper of a storm.
Weird the way we're in a watch area (OKC) and the weather looks beautiful outside. Kind of like May 3rd did when we got the f5. I love Oklahoma, but I could do without the twisters.
Take care everyone!
Good advice teeny. We've had some get pretty close, but the only time I've had the girls get into a closet was before we moved to the hill country.
That one was only a couple of miles away.
Hubby, however, could give you some close up accounts that scared the doodle even out of him.
(and he kind of likes 'living on the edge' :)
Prayers up for everyone in that area, may God protect you.
This is normal weather for this time of year...Sure, it's something to be aware of, but is it really worth a FR thread???
That's me! Thank God for FR! I'm sitting here with no TV or radio on. Completely oblivious to the weather warnings. Thanks.
Let's have another Michael/Paris/Schoolteacher screws student thread, instead.
So that mean your "fine Army hunk" is a student at that fine fort .... an instructor .... or stationed there?
While I am not one to post just anything, when the SPC comes out with one of these rare warnings I think it is prudent to make sure folks who might not be near a TV or radio or waiting somewhere and has only their laptop and has not been made aware of the impending weather.
Frankly I think this is one of the best aspects of FR, not only to discuss news of the day, but weather news, that has been breaking all day. Evidently there are many who feel this is an important news item.
Perhaps next time Keith you might just pass up the thread. I certainly did not intend to post unimportant weather news. I would not wish my threads to be a waste of FR bandwidth.
Depends on definition of "normal"....yes tornadoes are normal.
But this has a chance to be the sort of outbreak that only happens once every 3-5 years.
I notice it was taken out of breaking.
I've seen posts on sub Mag-4 quakes in California, or posts about plain old rain in California, left in Breaking news for ages.
Keith, see post 32. This is a necessary thread.

Threadworthy? Sheesh we'll crank out a hundred posts over someone spilling some non-dairy creamer in an office building thus leaving "white powder."
It happens. Have you got a plan B?
Oh my, I lived 1/2 mile from the May 3, 1999 F4 that plowed through Haysville/south Wichita. No power for 74 hours, and I walked the length of the street that the tornado tore up.
It was surreal
I also saw the damage from the April 26, 1991 F5 tornado that did Haysville/south Wichita/McConnell AFB/Andover
You can bet I'm watching it
I do not miss these things at all. Been in two, seen many
bmp
Glad that's all it did.
Storm's here in Mustang, OK now. Dime size hail in my yard, heavy rain. It's getting darker outside, and the rain has actually let up a little bit. More lightning though. Supposed to get worse.
I didn't know we were in a severe storm watch until I got the ping to this thread. I don't watch tv very much and I don't even own a radio besides the ones in my cars.
I actually agree. When it is breaking news here in Kansas and than news alerts on FOX news one would think this rates front page and breaking news.
Weather is very VERY dangerous current event that now that we have technology to give us fair warning we should make it our purpose to stay informed.
There are folks who do not have TVs at work, that check on the web, FR to be exact about current news stories, this falls into that should they live in the severe weather area.
Perhaps the admin moderator can explain to us why this is not considered a breaking news or front page news item?
Again, I ask because it sure as heck is breaking in the Kansas and Missouri area and early enough to have folks prepared.
And living in Kansas, this kind of thing can come out of nowhere, with the ability to catch many people off guard.
I certainly do not see anything wrong with trying every way possible to keep people safe.
He is currently stationed at Ft Leavenworth, he travels around the world he is with BCTP Ops.
He finished the course a few years back.
My husband was in the Air Force when the tornado hit McConnell. Totally freaked him out, as he is from South Carolina.
And you are wrong about Wichita. It is not boring. You can find anything you want in this city, unless you are looking for bath houses and brothels!
