Thank you for the alert.

Once spent several days in Hays, Kansas for a wedding. I don't think there was a day that went by during that period that there weren't tornado warnings.

Where I live now -- very hilly -- we get microbursts a lot more freqently. Not considered a tornado, but still not a whole lot of fun. We have had tornados, but they are exceptionally rare. Mostly our damage comes from lightning and flash flooding.

Please take a moment to look at this map, to see if you are at risk of thess very serious storms making it's way through the heartland.

Also send this to your email friends and family to make sure they are not caught in the storm.

Please take care to secure items, bring in the pets and have a radio for information if the power is out.

I just checked good time to check batteries.

I certainly am not trying to nag about this but as a former Air Force Forecaster I can tell you with certainty this can be very dangerous.

You might take a look at the previous comment and the maps.

Actually as an AF brat and former AF and now married to a fine Army hunk we happen to move to some of the more how shall I say it, severe weather areas.

While in Lawton we had a tornado hit it was miserable. If I recall, a few years back the Leavenworth area was hit with a Tornado, if anyone has the 411 on that please add it to the thread.

Have to add one thing, the alerts in Kansas are far better than in Oklahoma. While in OK we had 2 sirens in our area we have 4 here in Kansas.

Folks should heed your advice when it looks as you said outside.

Thanks for the comment, friend.

I will try and stay on top of the alerts for you in the area and post them onto FR.

Which incidentally is another good use of FR, not only do we have excellent debate but we can also help out one another when events like severe weather occur.

BTW, I have lived in KS my whole life, and I have never had any damage done by a tornado. Have seen some pretty creepy weather, though.

To: teenyelliott

I had not put it on the kansas board, would like you to add it?

Good to know you have stayed safe in previous bad weather events.

I frankly think it is a hit or miss deal. All one can do is to be prepaired and have a place to wait out a bad storm and frankly have a common contact should folks get seperated so folks can call and touch base with their loved one's and friends.

This alert is not given lightly. Actually it is very rare that SPC goes out and gives this weather information.

I've got an unusual contingency plan for a tornado. If I see one coming, I plan to jump into the pond next to my house and swim to the bottom right as the tornado as approaching. I figure I can hold my breath easily for a minute, by which time the tornado will be gone. And I've never heard of tornados sucking all the water out of ponds.

Good advice teeny. We've had some get pretty close, but the only time I've had the girls get into a closet was before we moved to the hill country.

That one was only a couple of miles away.

While I am not one to post just anything, when the SPC comes out with one of these rare warnings I think it is prudent to make sure folks who might not be near a TV or radio or waiting somewhere and has only their laptop and has not been made aware of the impending weather.

Frankly I think this is one of the best aspects of FR, not only to discuss news of the day, but weather news, that has been breaking all day. Evidently there are many who feel this is an important news item.

Perhaps next time Keith you might just pass up the thread. I certainly did not intend to post unimportant weather news. I would not wish my threads to be a waste of FR bandwidth.

Depends on definition of "normal"....yes tornadoes are normal.

But this has a chance to be the sort of outbreak that only happens once every 3-5 years.

I notice it was taken out of breaking.

I've seen posts on sub Mag-4 quakes in California, or posts about plain old rain in California, left in Breaking news for ages.

Oh my, I lived 1/2 mile from the May 3, 1999 F4 that plowed through Haysville/south Wichita. No power for 74 hours, and I walked the length of the street that the tornado tore up.

It was surreal

I also saw the damage from the April 26, 1991 F5 tornado that did Haysville/south Wichita/McConnell AFB/Andover

You can bet I'm watching it

Storm's here in Mustang, OK now. Dime size hail in my yard, heavy rain. It's getting darker outside, and the rain has actually let up a little bit. More lightning though. Supposed to get worse.

I didn't know we were in a severe storm watch until I got the ping to this thread. I don't watch tv very much and I don't even own a radio besides the ones in my cars.

I actually agree. When it is breaking news here in Kansas and than news alerts on FOX news one would think this rates front page and breaking news.

Weather is very VERY dangerous current event that now that we have technology to give us fair warning we should make it our purpose to stay informed.

There are folks who do not have TVs at work, that check on the web, FR to be exact about current news stories, this falls into that should they live in the severe weather area.

Perhaps the admin moderator can explain to us why this is not considered a breaking news or front page news item?

Again, I ask because it sure as heck is breaking in the Kansas and Missouri area and early enough to have folks prepared.

Many people, like me, get ALL their news from the internet. If it hadn't been for militarychick's post, I wouldn't have known anything about it.

And living in Kansas, this kind of thing can come out of nowhere, with the ability to catch many people off guard.

I certainly do not see anything wrong with trying every way possible to keep people safe.

I live in Wichita, too, but for some reason the majority of the damage is usually south and/or east of town.

My husband was in the Air Force when the tornado hit McConnell. Totally freaked him out, as he is from South Carolina.

And you are wrong about Wichita. It is not boring. You can find anything you want in this city, unless you are looking for bath houses and brothels!

>>>Many people, like me, get ALL their news from the internet.

That may not be a wise choice. When I need severe weather info, the Internet is the last place I go. There are plenty of reasons "the Internet" can become unavailable, and should not be relied upon as a source for "life or death" emergency notification. It is up to the people in harm's way to monitor situations as they develop, and act when necessary to protect life, limb & property...and do so without rushing to post a FR thread about it first...that's my $0.02 - which, apparently is worth less than the 2 cents I attribute it.

I would declare the situation "Safe" for Wichita. The dryline is about to cross Sedgwick county and the thunderstorms are flaring up east of it in Butler - this will extract the energy out of the atmosphere west of the storms preventing development in Sedgwick.

Base reflectivity
Note the dryline as a thin blue line in the near-clutter

Base velocity
Nothing of note west of Wichita. No evidence of circulation (at the time of this posting) east of Wichita.

Broad reflectivity loop
Showing development trends and Wichita out of danger
