Manson Follower Denied Parole
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 2, 2005

Posted on 06/02/2005 1:43:36 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Former Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins was denied parole for the 11th time Wednesday for her role in the 1969 murders of actress Sharon Tate and six others during a crime rampage that stunned the nation.

Atkins, now 57, was one of cult leader Manson's "family" of young killers who burst into a Benedict Canyon home 36 years ago and killed Tate and four others. The following night, they stabbed to death a wealthy couple in their Los Angeles home.

Although Atkins has since embraced Christianity and apologized for the killings, Board of Prison Terms spokesman Tip Kindel said the prison board's members believed it was unreasonable to assume she was a suitable parole risk.

"They primarily cited the gravity of the crime, the fact the murders were carried out in an especially cruel and callous manner," Kindel said.

Glad she "embraced Christianity." Now she can spend the rest of her life spreading the gospel to other inmates. She's where she deserves to be.

I'm sure a string of heartfelt apologies will make up for the cold, brutal way those people were murdered.

May she rot in prison where she belongs.

Seems like they all "Jump on the Jesus Train" when they want to get out of the slammer.

Been quite awhile but if I recall correctly they all received the death sentence, later commuted to LWOP.
Looks like this outstanding specimen of humanity is gonna do every day of it.

perp "But Judge, I cant do life in prison"
judge "Thats OK son, just do all you can"

These conversions would be so much more convincing if any inmate were to say something like, "I'm pretty sure Jesus wants me to stay in prison and pay for what I did."

I agree. Let's hope that she became a Christian because she believed the gospel, rather than to impress the parole board.

She was denied parole because she was involved in a famous murder.

Many whose crimes are equally heinous are granted parole, but they didn't kill famous people.

Execution of convicted murderers solves that problem.

Leslie Van Houten is another "perfect inmate" who feels she is entitled to parole. A bunch of big cry babies who should be knocking wood that they are still sucking oxygen.

Every time one of them is denied parole I smile.

I heard an interview with David Berkowitz(sp) (Son of Sam) who indicated he didn't want to get out of prison (he has converted too.) He still sounded loopy as a road lizard, though.

Well put. If she is genuinely repentant, then the Lord will grant mercy on her soul, when she meets Him. Until then, she is where she belongs.

Been quite awhile but if I recall correctly they all received the death sentence, later commuted to LWOP [life without parole].

Your recollection is mostly correct. Manson, Atkins, Krenwinkel, Van Houten, Watson, and Beausoleil were sentenced to death. All California death sentences were overturned by the CA Supreme Court in 1972. Under state law in effect at the time, they became eligible for parole in eight years.

Van Houten has the best shot of all of them of getting parole. Even the prosecutors think so.

I hope she doesn't.

Maybe she can link up with the Clintons? They seem to be able to pull off some pretty amazing pardons for terrorists, cocaine distributors, bank robbers and killers?

moxley - that was a nephew. Ted had nothing to do with it.
kopechne - No doubt he is full responsible for this death.
monroe - absolutely no evidence he'd had anyting to do with her death. Jack and Bobby, yup, but I've never heard anyone allege Teddy was involved. I'm not even sure if he ever met her.

Actually, Atkins didn't participate in the LaBianca murders. But she did take in the murder of Gary Hinman a short time before.

Another reason she was denied parole is that she (along with Tex Watson) murdered a pregnant woman. It's hard to imagine a crime lower than that.

Susan Atkins participates actively in Christian worship services and effectively mentors to young inmates. She deserves to be commended and applauded, but could never deserve to be released from prison.

Thanks, I didn't need to see that!! Tex Watson was finally caught after the murders, in McKinney, Texas and locked up in the Collin County Jail. It happened on the same night I had a "blind date" and my date had unknownst to me, a open alcohol container in the car. We got pulled over and taken to the Collin County Jail and had to spend the night in the same building with that horrid monster Watson. Not something to brag about, but it makes me feel dirty having to know I was in the same building at the same time.
