Fresno Mayor Alan Autry waded into a volatile federal issue Thursday in his annual State of the City speech, calling for a two-year moratorium on immigration in order to address the "chaos now masquerading as a border."
Autry acknowledged that he would likely get criticism for his comments, much as Gov. Schwarzenegger came under fire after praising Minuteman Project volunteers who patrolled the Mexican border.

a two-year moratorium on immigration in order to address the "chaos now masquerading as a border." Excellent idea, but difficult to do when we have a chaos masquerading as a federal gov't.

Autrey has MY vote. When will the politicians (with all their polls) realize some very simple numbers: 80% of the American people want these illegal immigrants to GET OUT AND STAY OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus, it sets a good example. The more local and state politicos stand up like that, the more pressure will increase on those at the federal level.

The illegal alien invasion from Mexico has to be by design. It is too large and too successful to have been a mistake.

The "legal" immigration levels into the USA actually should be slightly increased, and ICE should kick themselves into high gear and bend over backwards to expeditiously process all those future "legal" USA citizen wannabees.
Border jumpers, illegal aliens, whatever you want to call the imported slave class and international criminal elements, need to be deported, as of yesterday.
We have laws, just as Canada,Mexico, Australia and virtually every sovereign nation in the world has laws, regarding who and under what circumstances, is allowed to enter, work, and own property in our country.
If our government refuses to enforce those laws regarding non-citizens, I refuse to abide by the governments arbitrary "rule of law" as a citizen.
Chaos? Anarchy?
I can deal with that.
Just don't expect me to pay any more attention to arbitrary "laws" that only apply to people stupid enough to believe we are still a society governed by the rule of law via an elected, representative government.

I wonder if this is a political epiphany by GovRino and Mayor "Bubba", and can either man match his rhetoric on this issue with a serious and substantive effort.

The momentum is building against illegals but if you think they are expensive now wait until we legalize them, they will all go on the dole for the maximum 5 years allowed by welfare and quit working. The best thing that can happen is amnesty gets held up in the House ans Senate and we start deporting them when we find them.

Amnesty for 20 million illegal aliens will break the financial and social back of this nation - it can't rebound from such an event.

I thought Arnie recently called for a separate California border patrol. Over and above the USBP. More BS I guess.
Bottomline. PresBush should be ashamed for the weak effort by his administration in securing the US borders from illegals, terrorists and other assorted criminals. Pathetic!

"calling for a two-year moratorium on immigration"
A two year moratorium?
So the aliens all they have to do is wait it out for two years and then they can come flooding in like a torrent.
How asinine!
Moratoriums are useless in that it does not stop aliens from setting foot and families on our soil.

Has it dawned on you that it is possible - even likely that our government cannot fix this problem even if it wanted to?
It is only around 20 million people we are talking about here, after all.
If 100% of all three of our government bodies woke up tomorrow and in one unanimous voice and vote declared the illegal aliens would be deported - WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?
Answer: Notta - nuttin' - forget it. It's too huge. There is no way for Mexico to be able to absorb that many people and no way for us to get them out of here - even if every breathing legitimate citizen and elected official in this nation was in total, harmonious agreement over it.

Strong disagreement coming from me! These Mexicans would be going back to Mexico in much better shape than when they left. Their personal assets would be 1000 x's greater. They now know what is required to performa days work in America and make a success of themselves. The number of Mexican businessmen in America is not a small number. Take those skills back home and apply them!

>>>Has it dawned on you that it is possible - even likely that our government cannot fix this problem even if it wanted to?NO! I don't buy into your defeatist attitude either. In conjunction with securing the borders, enforcing existing laws that punish employers who hire illegals and halting all welfare payouts to illegals, a multi-year moratorium would be ideal. If need be, the feds should seriously consider placing US military units on the borders to assist the USBP in enforcing the law. After taking these steps and stopping the flow of illegals into the US, then and only then can any guest worker program be considered and expected to operate properly. Otherwise all that is being accomplished is to perpetuate and exacerbate a serious national security problem. A problem that will continue to undermine our constitutional republic.

Whatever it takes!
Otherwise, the problem of illegal immigration will never be resolved. It will never go away. Changes to US immigration policy that occured from 1965 to 1990 has changed this great nation forever. It's a proven fact. More liberalization of US policy is directly responsible for the destruction of our nation, as it continues to undermine the very fabric of our constitutional republic. Ignoring these facts will only hasten the end. I for one, don't ever want to see that happen.

They shouldn't be rounded up and deported in a massive raid to the delight of media vultures and bottom feeding attorneys - they have to be
pressured out through disincentives to come here/incentives to return home. See
the Krikorian Plan, which has been promoted by many of us here for a long time now.
The beauty of it is that it robs the media of convenient "martyr" material, the illegal-legal eagles of clients and saves us (the United States) billions of dollars because the aliens remove themselves at their own expense.
The critical necessity to get that ball rolling is more politicians willing to cough up their best contributors. We can pressure them to do so with our votes and, more importantly, our individually small contributions that constitute the majority of campaign funding by law.
So don't hesitate to throw a RINO on the barby this Memorial Day weekend! Just watch out for all that splattering pork fat.

Hey Happy! Is that Mr. Autry your Mayor? I like him!!! He's a good local elected official! I generally prefer local elected officials over state and federal. "The government that governs least, governs best" and "the government closest to the people" and things like that are far more important to people's everyday lives than all this Washington D.C. & Sacramento hocus pocus, gitcha gotcha, pitch & bitch!!!
Oh! And besides, I liked the way Autry stood right up to the goofy Governator from the get-go!!! (grin)(yeah, I know, he apologized an all that...)
