They acknowledged that they're not certain whether the University of Colorado ethnic-studies professor was ever notified and that they told reporters as recently as February that he was still an associate member.

This tribe sounds like a bunch of complete dumbasses.

Churchill should therefore be a member by default.

The thing about Indian ancestry is touch and go. There's a lot of us who are "part Indian" but only know it because of family oral history. Can't track it down through genealogy due to lack of records.

I once knew a guy in Tulsa who was 1/4 Cherokee. He had blond hair and blue eyes. He got a full scholarship to an Indian college. It was hilarious when I thought about what the other Indians thought when they saw him at school.

The fewer tribe members, the more money the tribe members get.

True but also consider that every leach in the country is trying to claim Indian ancestry in order to cash in on free money.

A lot of oral history just ain't. I think I meet more people who claim Indian ancestry (usually Cherokee) than not. Unless those old Cherokees had 12 inch coup sticks it just didn't happen. Blending was not that common.

One lady here on FR claimed (in good faith, based on what her father told her) to be decended from an Apache princess. She used the ancestor's name as a screen name.

I know the Apaches. There is no equivalent or near equivalent to a "princess". The name was not Apache in any of the dialects. I did a Google and the "Apache Princess" was a fictional character in a 1950's movie. I think I ruined that lady's whole day.

In Alaska, the natives accept indians from other villages; just out of their concept of sharing / live and let live attitude. That only goes so far though. If you weren't born in that village, you have no voting, financial rights, job preferences, and in the end you are somewhat an unperson of sorts with the other natives. Half breeds raised native all their life in that village (white relatives never accepted them), having a parent from that village are complete members; even people say 3/4 white.

Couldn't imagine a white guy move in and become native due to political beliefs.

In Indian Territory, it was common for a white man to take an Indian Wife. That's why families that go way back in that general area (including Missouri and Arkansas) will be part Indian from one tribe or other.

In Oklahoma, it used to be a DISGRACE to be part Indian. People would keep it a secret. Now it's so funny with all those WANNABE's running around. :0)

My one son said he sure wishes we could PROVE our Indian heritage. He'd like to get in on some of those casino profits. haha

BTW, you're a meanie. :0) You shouldn't have destroyed that poor lady's illusions. Now she probably has nothing to be proud of or to brag about in her life.

In Oklahoma, it used to be a DISGRACE to be part Indian.

Exactly. And that is why it didn't happen all that often. With notable exceptions like Sam Houston it was a lower class phenomenon or a result of the lack of white brides during the early periods. It wasn't uncommon but it wasn't all that common either. When I lived there everyone knew of a few successful intermarriages. The trouble was that they all knew of the same ones.

The early population was so sparse and intermarriage so rare and the time period so narrow that it just can't account for the number of people who claim the bloodlines now. The eastern Oklahoma tribes were very developed, fine featured, and culturally adaptable so some intermarriage did happen but not on the scale that would account for all of the "one quarter Cherokees" that I have met. If your family has been in the area for generations it is quite possible, even probable, that at least one had an Indian wife.

The lady that I disabused of her Apache origins seemed to be very educated and accomplished. She just fell for a childhood fairy tale told to her by her father. I often wonder what the reason is for the number of people who do claim fictional ancestery. Is it a collective reach for an imagined nobility or some hidden need for victimhood?

CHURCHILL's STALE LEFTOVER DEFENSE: Witch Hunt

'Witch hunt' decried
Academic probe is politically motivated, prof tells panel

By Stuart Steers and Hector Gutierrez, Rocky Mountain News
May 25, 2005

BOULDER - Ward Churchill told a University of Colorado committee Tuesday that the academic misconduct investigation now under way is a politically motivated attempt to boot him from the faculty.

The embattled ethnic studies professor met for just under two hours with CU's standing committee on research misconduct, which is investigating allegations that Churchill engaged in plagiarism and falsified historical information in his scholarly work. This was the first time Churchill met with the committee to defend himself.

It's a valid inquest! to root-out the anti-American Marxist fraudulent bastard rabble-rouser sociopath, that is what it is. Churchill is pathologically self-righteous.

"Ward just needs to pack up SUV...head off to Montana."

NOT TO MONTANA - there's raw Americana there! Churchill should be exiled to NonCapitialistic Cuba. He can write Castro's speeches. Also, all of Churchilll's bountiful elite-capitistist possessions, property and assets should be auctioned-off and the proceeds given to the proverty-stricken Rose Bud Indian reservation. That would be true justice! Enrichening himself with his phony American Indian advocacy! Phony Academia promoting that Bastard!

There are so many people claiming to be part Indian, that they are known as Wannabe's, so I know what you're talking about.

It is very doubtful that there are very many 1/4 Indians running around now. The original blood has been watered down too much.

The main reason, IMO, why there are so many people making those claims now is because it's so cool to be part of PETA/GAIA/WICCA & worship nature and Mother Earth. The Noble Redman thing - who never did a wrong thing in his life, you know . ROFL

But you shouldn't have been so "mean" to that gal. Sometimes we need our bubbles.
