Zach Chase thought the police cars seemed out of place.
One car was pulled off of University Avenue in Provo with its lights flashing.
Chase saw a man dressed in a denim jacket and carrying a bulging backpack. The man was edging toward him and was staring into his eyes.
"I got the feeling, 'Oh no, those cops are looking for him,' " Chase, of Provo, later helped West Valley police identify the figure in the shadows as Norman Gaddis, a 38-year-old man with a history of violent crime and driving under the influence.
Chase would spend the next two hours kidnapped in his own car, following Gaddis's demands to turn right here or left there. Ultimately, Chase would be allowed to drive away unharmed.
But when Gaddis slid around Chase's Toyota Camry and jumped into the back seat, Chase was concerned for his own survival and that of his dog.
Though he never saw a weapon and though Gaddis never mentioned one, Chase said he thought Gaddis might be toting one in his backpack.
Gaddis instructed Chase to drive straight, crossing University Avenue and avoiding the search that swarmed around the home he had allegedly just burglarized. "I saw my cell phone and I grabbed it and called 911 immediately," he said. "I told them I was at this brown and tan apartment building and this guy is making me drive around all these places."
Chase said that he was in a tan Toyota Camry, but he did not know the license plate number. "I told them, 'I don't know the license plate number, but you can call my parents and get it from them." Chase said he gave the phone number to the dispatcher, who then pushed for an address.
"I'm in Salt Lake," Chase said.

why was the car's back door unlocked?
"Ask me who I am," Chase said, interrupting his captor's ramblings. Confused, Gaddis remained silent until Chase repeated the invitation twice.
"Who are you?" Gaddis finally asked.
"I am an inspirational, powerful, loving, joyful being of light," Chase said, repeating a phrase he had memorized at Impact Trainings. Chase said Gaddis's shoulders relaxed, and for the first time, the man smiled.
"Ask me why I am here," Chase continued. Again, Gaddis was reluctant but asked the question, "Why are you here?".
"As an inspirational, loving, joyful being of light I bring forth connection, radiance and beauty, creating a world where peace, freedom and trust passionately resound," Chase said.
Don't you hate it when you're trying to get away from a burglary and the guy you carjack is out of his fricking mind?
I'll have to memorize those lines and use them if I'm carjacked or under the gun of a criminal :)
A sign of the times.
Let's see....
He sees this hood glaring at him and he doesn't"
Lock his doors,
Hit the gas,
or after the clown gets in, doesn't use the car as a weapon to disable the perp. (i.e. slam into something)
What a disgusting little sissy. Just the sort of personality, particularly in a male, the modern establishment loves: always ready to be bitch-slapped whether by an unarmed thug or the government, and completely incapable of taking the simplest steps to save himself without instructions from the authorities.
you have a point, but the kid was only 17 and scared, but when the guy got out at the apartment, I would have drove the heck away.
Well, his day was certainly connected, and it seems clear he was scared enough to make a powerful case for keeping a clean change of underwear in one's car, but to be honest, I think locking the doors would have been better
I think I would have floored it just as the perp's foot touched the pavement.
