I noticed that too, AND, it seems like they recently took a very strange position (for NYT) on another subject- I don't remember exactly what now- but I wondered at the time, were they maybe adjusting their outlook?

Unfortunately, I think it's just the author, not a new direction for the Times. Just read his writing history.
