"Mills and Chellaney also noted the choice of Boeing may be an attempt by India to balance relations between Europe and the United States after domestic state-run carrier Indian Airlines gave Airbus the order to supply 43 aircraft."

Indian Airlines should re-think that order as punishment for the Airpigs trying to tell the Indian government how to handle their business. It would only make sense to fly the better plane, and Boeing's 787 sure looks like a winner.

Harwood Airbus Industrie vice president Nigel Harwood said...he would write to India's civil aviation ministry seeking reconsideration . . . and ask for fresh tenders.

I got your fresh tenders right here, Nigel,
now sit down and STFU.

A-I mulls suit against Airbus

ABU DHABI, APRIL 29: Air-India (A-I) has sought legal opinion to file a suit against Airbus for its outburst against the former’s decision to award a contract to Boeing for the purchase of 50 aircraft for an investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

A-I has taken strong objection to Airbus’ complaint that the A-I board cleared the Boeing deal without referring it to the Comptroller & Auditor General of India and Chief Vigilance Commissioner.

A-I may file a defamation suit against Airbus for questioning its wisdom, expertise and knowledge for the selection of an aircraft supplier, according to observers tracking these developments.

“A-I has already taken strong objection to Airbus’ complaint and has sent out a letter in this regard to GoI seeking its nod for going ahead on this front. The A-I board, which cleared the Boeing deal last week, has already taken a decision that it would be sent to the Comptroller and Auditor General and Chief Vigilance Commissioner,” said said A-I CMD V Thulasidas. http://www.financialexpress.com/fe_full_story.php?content_id=89596

Was this really the choice for Air India? The B787 and A380 don't seem to be anywhere close in market segment, size-wise. Maybe the range is close, but the Airbus carries close to double the passengers. Only way I could see them competing is if Air India were planning two simultaneous flights to the same destination in a B787 versus one in an A380 - and even then, why not have the flexibility to split those flights up?

Sounds like Airbus needs someone to call them a whaaambulance.

That is a relevant comparison, but only if you're talking about similar aircraft over similar ranges. In other words, if the A380 can carry exactly twice as many passengers as the B787 (just to use round numbers), than the B787 doesn't have to burn exactly half as much fuel per mile (at the same speed) as the A380. If it burns more than half, then the airline has to determine whether that marginal increment in cost per seat-mile is counterbalanced by the improved flexibility in sending two aircraft at the same (or different) times to the same (or different) destination(s).

Imagine what it will be like when one of these crashes fully loaded. And one is going to crash sooner or later. It will be horrible.

Add to that you need to revamp all your airports & terminals And the airline need more hanger space ( or build bigger ones) to work on them. Plus you have less alternate airports to set down in event of an emergency.
