Oldest rock art in Britain: 12,800 years
Telegraph (UK) ^ | 22/04/2005 | Roger Highfield, Science Editor

Hard evidence that the engravings of women and extinct creatures at Creswell Crags are more than 12,800 years old is published today, making them Britain's oldest rock art.

Creswell Crags, on the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire border, is riddled with caves which contain preserved evidence of human activity during the last Ice Age.

Recently, engravings were found on the walls and ceiling depicting animals such as the European Bison, now extinct in Britain, female dancers or birds - depending on the view of the archaeologist - and intimate female body parts.

Dating rock art is difficult, especially if there are no charcoal-based black pigments that can be radiocarbon dated, so the precise age is only known in rare cases.

However, scientists from Bristol, Sheffield and The Open Universities were able to measure minute traces of radioactive uranium in thin limestone crusts that had coated the engravings.

These measurements allowed the scientists to establish the age of stalagmites in Church Hole - which contains most of the engravings - at around 12,800 years, more than double the age of earlier, uncontroversial, examples of ancient art.

The results establish once and for all the authenticity and Ice-Age antiquity of the rock art. The results will be discussed by Dr Alistair Pike of Bristol tomorrow at the British Rock Art Group conference in the university.

The archaelogists point to this engraving as proof that the find is at least 12,800 years old.

It would be nice if all FReeperes would do a thorough investigation prior to posting the pic of this very same ancient engraving.

My research had shown that this creature is actually 24,000 years old, and that it was responsible for developing the first journalistic service, carving into stone the name of said service:

FOCK SNOOZE !!! ;-))

Whacks against the Word of God are good things, they test the faith of believers. If there is a God and he said 'this is so' then it is so irrespective of all the terrifying and awesome 'whacks' against it.

DNA sample links 2 men, 9,000 years apart

July 31, 1997
Web posted at: 3:40 p.m. EDT (1940 GMT)

CHEDDAR, England (CNN) -- Adrian Targett is a regular guy in Cheddar, a schoolteacher. His extended family is another matter -- real cavemen, some of them.

Or at least, thousands of years ago they were. Targett learned recently that he is the direct descendant of a man who lived 9,000 years ago, and whose bones were found at the turn of the century in Cheddar's famous caves. Scientists compared the DNA from one of Cheddar Man's molars to that of scrapings taken from the mouths of 20 local Cheddarites, and Targett was a match.
