SCHLUSSEL: "The Interpreter" - Sean Penn's U.N. Mash Note

“The Interpreter”: Sean Penn’s U.N. Mash Note April 22, 2005 By Debbie Schlussel

The last time I wrote about Jeff Spicoli a/k/a Sean Penn, he sent me an e-mail calling me the c-word.

In the past, Penn reportedly shot reporters with a squirt gun filled with his urine, so I got off easy. Classy guy.

I critiqued Penn’s absurd interview in the thankfully defunct Talk Magazine. It was just months after 9/11, and Spicoli was deluded from smoking too much pot, again. He didn’t just insist that President Bush, Rupert Murdoch, Howard Stern, and Bill O’Reilly were as bad as Osama Bin Laden and Hitler. They were worse.

Since then, as we now know, Penn transformed himself into failed emissary to Iraq—a Baghdad Spicoli a la Hanoi Jane.

But now Penn’s gotten smarter. His propaganda doesn’t work when he’s playing himself in real life.

So he’s turned to the silver screen to do it for him, in “The Interpreter,” debuting in theaters today. The United Nations is the setting, but it’s also the main star of the film. Penn and Nicole Kidman are merely the co-stars.

As for promoting the U.N., Leni Reifenstahl (Hitler’s propagandist) couldn’t have done better—even if it’s hard to believe Spicoli as Secret Service Agent. (When he tries to fake crying, all you can hear is his yearning for “tasty waves and a cool buzz.”)

Just when the U.N.—the bizarre confab of Third World republics and America haters—is getting its due in the media, Director Sydney Pollack comes to the rescue. “Interpreter” portrays this fraudulent former League of Nations as the idealistic body it never was and nothing close to the International House of Bozos it’s been for at least half a century.

Kofi Annan is one smart cookie.

Sean Penn? A zonked out Lefty. Its just as well he's quitting Hollywood. Good riddance!

They say they're going to quit, or leave the country, but they never do.

Sorry, I despise Penn...but thought his acting was very good in Mystic River, Sweet and Lowdown, State of Grace, 21 Grams, The Falcon and The Snowman.

He gives off the impression of being a naive and idealistic 20 something who'll grow out of it. Then you realize that he's in his mid 40s.

Never have seen any of them, but his best acting role outside of fast times was in team America.

Which gets released on DVD Next month.

He was great in "The Falcon and the Snowman."

The idiot is an amazing actor. Sort of like a thespian Rainman, or a monkey who can work a rubic's cube. He's very good at one thing, and one thing only. Fortunately for him, that one thing pays very well.

Mystic River. Yeah yeah. I know. The message was anti-death penalty. But aside from that, Penn was excellent in it.

I won't watch Interpreter though. Didn't even know Penn was in it. All the previews i've seen just showed Nicole Kidman. Hmm.

The extreme lefty "New Times" magazine (at least the south florida version) hated it, and made everyone feel stupid for even breathing Pollacks name as if here were a great or even good director.

Rex Reed is a complete and utter disgrace to anyone who values film and film criticism. What a fraud!

Are you thinking of 'Dead Man Walking' as the anti-death penalty film? I thought it was very fair and empathetic to the victim's families. R. Lee Ermey was in it!

No. Have you seen Mystic River? At the end, the victims father (Penn) kills the guy he thinks killed his daughter, only to find out an hour later that it was the wrong guy. See? They "killed an innocent man". That is the essence of the anti-death penalty argument these days. (In real life, they have found DNA that exonerates some people who have already been executed.)

So, still haven't seen it, just like I won't watch the hunt for red october or silverdo or the lethal weapons series any longer.

Dip wads don't need my money, BTW I do make exceptions for Sgt York and 1776.

Thin Red Line. He played a "battle-hardened" First Sgt. Implausible for those of us who served. But I suppose he did a decent job.

Mystic River was pretty good.

I don't expect good politics from actors or good acting from politicians.

It must be REALLY bad if it has a leftist message and he STILL hated it.

True. The astounding thing is that if they played it straight, showed the terrorists as Arab Muzzies, and showed the UN to be the corrupt cesspit it really is, they'd have one of the year's greatest blockbusters. Then I'd gladly go to see it; now, I won't.

many actors are like that: savants! Richard Gere can't put 2 words together without a script to read.
My husband did a movie promo with Gere years ago, and he came home saying what a jerk the guy is.

I guess for me it had to do with the fact that Penn was very convincing as the father of a 19 year old. At the time i was the mother of a 19 year old daughter so i was able to relate to how a parent would feel if their 19 year old daughter was murdered.

Right. Kidmans a LOT prettier than Penn. But i wonder if they're deliberatly hiding Penn's appearance in the film because that's a dead giveaway that the films a propaganda piece.
