Police said they arrested a man for spitting on two-time Academy Award-winning actress Jana Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.
Fonda, 67, spoke at Unity Temple, in The Plaza shopping district, about her new best-selling book, "My Life So Far," and her new movie with Jennifer Lopez called "Monster-In-Law."
At about 9 p.m., police said, a man who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.
They said the man then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.
Fonda declined to prosecute the man.
Michael A. Smith, 54, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a city charge.
In 1972, Fonda was photographed sitting in a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft tank. About her involvement in the Vietnam War, Fonda has apologized for her anti-aircraft tank photo. She has called it an incredible lapse in judgment

Well, I don't care for Ms. Fonda, but I don't see where spitting on her changes anything.
I do my part by NOT buying her book or watching her on tv. Boycotting her and encouraging others to do so is far more effective. Hitting someone in the pocketbook sends a clear message.
I appreciate this guy's initiative, but didn't he get the memo? The item to throw these days is salad dressing.

It seems she was upset NOT because she knew she did something wrong, but because she let herself be photographed doing it.

While I may not agree with his tactic...maybe now hanoi jane knows how it feels to be spit upon. Wonder if SHE liked it. As for pressing charges...I dont' think she would have been that stupid.

It is surpising that she didnt press charges.
Well, it wasn't intended to change anything. I think this is one Vietnam Vet that lived with what she did and it has bothered him all this time. Right? Don't know. Wrong? Don't know. However, this Vet obviously had the strong desire to show her how it felt to be attacked and spit upon. That was his way of doing SOMETHING to make her know what it felt like.
I don't say it will change anything and I don't say it was right or wrong but it obviously made this Vet feel better that he was able to show her jsut how much she hurt the Vietnam Vets.
Why press charges? He'll eventually get cancer from the tobacco anyway.
Spitting the tobacco out is one thing. The trick is not shoving more in to your mouth.
I hope it happens every time she appears, though.

No I don't think it was surprising she didn't press charges. I think that would have just exacerbated the situation and the scandal of her being a traitor brought out into the open again BIG TIME.

It's interesting to read the comments of people who I presume were never in South Vietnam and probably never in any combat zone at all anywhere. Also, a lot of the people commenting have never been personally invested in a foreign conflict (my guess) and never suffered the indignity of a betrayal like Hanoi Jane's. Call the guy's actions juvenile, call them inappropriate, call them what you will - to me they are perfectly understandable. Not something I would do, but not something I would castigate someone for either. You had to be there.

I read the story twice and did not see where it stated he was a Viet Nam Vet. Maybe I somehow missed it.
whoa! Gives me shivers.. I remember in college some guy had a big vase-like spittoon, with a week's worth of spit or whatever sitting on his dresser. We had no clue what it was, and a bunch of us were clowning around.. knocked it off, and this molasses-like sludge goes pouring down some poor guy's back. The smell was something else - as was the look on his face as he pulled his shirt off and ran out of the room, gagging.
So, to take it in the face must be pretty bad! LOL

As a Vietnam Vet, I must disagree with you. The fact of the matter is that this gives her a VERY clear understanding of how alot of us still feel about her "Lapse of Judgement". To ensure that these Progressive's get the full thrust of our disgust with them, we must lower ourselves to their level and speak to them in their own language!!

I don't condone violence either. But that's part of the danger of the other side resorting to such acts.
When dialog breaks down, violence breaks out.
Dialog has been breaking down for a long time. I suspect the more pies and salad dressing they toss, the more difficult it will be for those on our side to control their impulses. People can only take being pushed around for so long. If it's to stop and return to dialog, they need to stop throwing pies and shouting down opposing voice.
We also don't have the full story. Could this guy have been in a POW camp and forced to listen to Hanoi Jane's treasonous broadcasts? If so, she's lucky it was only tobacco juice.
I understand your sentiment, and I kind of get a chuckle out of this episode.. but the problem is, to the average joe (well some of them anyway) this just makes the guy look like some redneck slob, and might actually create some feelings of sympathy for Jane. Oh well.. he did it, it's done.
Democrats are more often bold and agressive when pushing their agenda. Republicans more often take it in the a** such as what's going on with the Bolton nimination to the UN. It doesn't pay to be mealymouth and wimpish and let liberals run roughshod over good people. It is time the majority party act like the majority and put liberal scumbags in their place.
