COUNTERACTIVISM! of School Gay 'Tolerance' Activism "Day Of Silence" WEDS 4/13 - FLYER DOWNLOAD
email ^ | 04/11/2005 | self

Posted on 04/11/2005 7:43:03 AM PDT by The Spirit Of Allegiance

The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is promoting a nationwide push to get students to join in the “Day of Silence” next Wednesday, April 13, to highlight homosexual students 'who suffer in silence.' After the “Day of Silence,” local organizers are now adding, “Breaking the Silence” and having pro-gay speakers talk to students.

Sadly, many students (including Christian children!) and teachers are confused about the definition of "tolerance."

Gateways has created a handout for students called “Promoting Tolerance.” It helps them understand a biblical definition of tolerance that encourages them to keep their family’s moral values. This flyer can be the antidote to the erroneous education they may receive at school. Last year, a teacher who received “Promoting Tolerance” wrote:

“The article had an awesome response! Teachers raved over its description of tolerance and how students are to respond to differences while keeping their convictions.”

To download a free copy, visit http://www.gtbe.org

HOW TO USE THE HANDOUT

You can give “Promoting Tolerance” to students and parents at your church; distribute them to students in a campus Bible club; give copies to teachers; (if you are a teacher) give them to your students and discuss the issue of tolerance in class.

RECOMMENDATION

In a classroom setting you may want to give the article to students BEFORE or AFTER April 13. If you try to discuss the issue of tolerance on the official “Day of Silence,” students may feel uncomfortable talking about it.

I believe in equal rights. So a 15 year old girl I find on top of my 14 year old daughter gets the same treatment as a 15 year old boy. Once off the door jamb and out ya' go.

Excellent flyer. It's good to see that people are differentiating between 'tolerance' and 'acceptance'. Funny how the "nuanced" crowd doesn't seem to get it.

Does it also have the part of Biblical teaching that says homosexuality is an abomination? Like the Godly are not to yolk with homosexuals because they tend to defile? Does it explain to them what happened to the homos in Romans 1 or Sodom and Gomorrah? Did they leave all the important stuff about homosexuality out? Like Satan in the wilderness, are they twisting the teachings of the Bible to push their own agenda on the innocent?

Churches should make it known what the homosexuals are doing to the kids. It's just plain demented! Those people are soooo sick!
God kills homosexuals through nature. He always has.

Good point I would extend that to an older girl taking liberties with a minor of the same gender too. Stuatory rape should not differentiated by sexual orientation either.

I'm sure glad as a teacher that none of this is being promoted out my way. Even if it was, it wouldn't make it into my classroom.

And I have to add, I've never even seen the books, "Heather Has Two Mommies," "Bud Has Two Buddies," "Peter Has Two Papas," "Bruno Has Two...." forget that one.

Interesting point. I think the meaning for the word tolerance has been taken way out of whack by people on both sides of the spectrum. To me, the meaning of tolerance is not even about homosexuality. It does mean treating others as I would like to be treated (wonder where that came from??). I try to teach that to my students and don't even put race, homosexuality (I don't even discuss this as I don't feel it really should be in schools).
I'll "tolerate" gays, but I won't "tolerate" their pushing of a political message or lifestyle in a place that it does not belong.

You are lucky. As a high school teacher, I received a poster to post in my class if I supported GLSEN and would allow students with cards to remain silent during class on Wed. I do not support this and am angry that the school system has put in the middle of this. Today two of my students were discussing this one who would participate and the other who was raised to not accept this type of behavior. They asked for my opinion in which I said that I think it is a political topic which should not be allowed in schools. It is a club. We also have a youth fellowship for athletes but they have to meet before or after school. (By the way, the school district I teach in, in NC is only allowed to teach abstinence in school). I can not understand why we are promoting this during school hours. We also have a SAVE club, students against violence everywhere. This is where this thing belongs. I am all for tolerance, but this club has an agenda and I will not be promoting it. It is placing me in an awkward situation and has in the past caused some shouting matches. My husband said to just show a video for the hour and a half and that way no one could talk. I told him that that would waste a day of instruction for an agenda I did not sign on to do.

What if homosexuality is genetic?

The following pulled from The Gay Gene?

Isn't homosexuality heritable?
Yes, significantly.
So it is inherited?
No, it is not.
I'm confused. Isn't there is a "genetic component" to homosexuality?
Yes, but "component" is just a loose way of indicating genetic associations and linkages. This will not make sense unless you understand what, and how little, "linkage" and "association" really means.
What about all the evidence that shows that homosexuality "is genetic"?
There is not any, and none of the research itself claims there is; only the press and, sadly, certain researchers do-when speaking in sound bites to the public.
But isn't homosexuality "biologically in the brain"?
Of course it is. So is just about everything else. I'll bet people who pray regularly have certain enlarged portions of their brains!
So doesn't that mean that homosexuality is "innate"?
No more than prayer is. The brain changes with use or nonuse as much as muscles do-a good deal more, in fact. We just do not usually see it happening.
But doesn't homosexuality run in families?
Yes.
So you get it from your parents, right?
You get viruses from your parents, too, and some bad habits. Not everything that is familial is innate or genetic.
But it just seems to make sense. From the people I know there's a type-it's got to be inherited-that runs in families and a lot of these people are gay, right?
That is what associated traits are-but what exactly is the associated trait-or traits-you are detecting? If there is one thing the research confirms, it is that it is not "gayness" itself. That is why these traits are sometimes in evidence at a very early age, long before sexuality is shaped.
So what are these traits?
An important question, indeed. Science is being seriously obstructed in its effort to answer that question. If we were allowed- encouraged-to answer it, we would soon develop better ideas on what homosexuality is and how to change, or better, prevent it. We would know who was at greater risk for becoming homosexual and what environments- family or societal-foster it. As one prominent gay activist researcher implied, all genetic things being equal, it is a whole lot easier to become "gay" in New York than in Utah. So who do you think would benefit most from that kind of research?
Well, what traits do you guess are "associated," as you put it, with homosexuality?
May I speculate, perhaps wildly? That is how scientific hypotheses are first generated. The important thing is not to avoid ideas that prove wrong, just not to cling to them if they do.
Okay, go ahead, speculate.
Intelligence, anxiety, sensitivity, aesthetic abilities, taste. You know, all the stereotypes.
But where do these traits come from? Aren't they inherited?
We do not know yet. Some may be. Or rather, we do not know how much is inherited, and which elements are direct and which merely further associated and linked with other yet more fundamental traits. But you are getting the picture. That is how the research ought to proceed. It is not necessarily that the traits that facilitate homosexuality are themselves bad; perhaps many are gifts. Athleticism is a generally good thing, and we think highly of people who satisfy their athletic impulses as, say, outstanding BBPs. Not so the fellow who merely becomes a thug.
And there's more - a lot more.

Good for you. The communities and teachers here would not even tolerate that so there is very little about the topic that ever comes up here. The ONLY time it has come up in 9 years of teaching was when a couple of students came up claiming that Tinky Winky was gay (having heard the mighty Fallwell's all-knowing statement as such, not any statement from a pro-gay organization).

Abstinence is only taught here too. In our elementary, the PTA handles it and parents attend with their kids. Though I never really saw the g stuf going through school, even if I had, it would not have mattered. My parents trained us in morals and values and would not have worried about us being affected. None of my seven siblings nor I ever had to worry about drugs, alcohol, pre-marital s--, smoking, etc. We didn't really hit the parties, but we didn't hide under a rock either. We were all active in sports, youth groups, family, clubs (including Boy Scouts--all 6 boys are Eagle Scouts), etc. And yes, we went to an inner-city type high school (which I absolutely enjoyed). The afore-mention notion was confirmed when my brother recently told a study group classmate to leave the house when he started ranting about g-m. Luckily, the others were definitely not supportive of the guy.

As far as a promotion poster, I have that one solved. I sometimes conveniently forget things. I could just make that same excuse here if the situation ever arose.:)

I have to admit, I don't really like a lot of PC stuff. I think it's been taken way far to extreme in both directions. I don't like the organizations promoting g stuff everywhere. On the other extreme, it seems as if it's only a matter of time before old standbys like Shaggy and Scooby, Full House (3 real and surrogate dads), Laverne and Shirley (all of them--Carmine and Lenny and Squiggy included), Gilligan's Island, and so on are going to be accused of promoted the g agenda. I hear on Sesame Street that Ernie is moving out of Bert's place, Oscar will find a real home and will become nice, Big Bird will wear some clothes, Kermit will find a real frog as a girlfriend instead of a pig, and Elmo will go out for the football team. Coming soon to a TV near you.

"Discrimination" used be be a good thing, as in "discriminating tastes". It meant you were able to calmly evaluate, appreciate nuances, and politely decline things you thought could be replaced with better choices. Now it just means "judgemental" or worse, "bigoted".

It's the thought police trying to pressure your common sense away, to be replaced with their agenda-driven shibboleths.

The old damned if you do scenario. Don't even get me started with the d if you do, d if you don't scenario. It applies to a LOT of stuff nowadays. No matter what some teachers do, there are some vultures flying around waiting to attack--whether it be an intenerant media, certain kids or parents, certain fellow teachers, or the education liberals (those who use liberal methods against education), it can be precarious being a teacher. Luckily, my flexible and low-key way of doing things have so far staved off any real negative stuff happening, but you never know when something is going to happen, especially as a male teacher.

I won't go into all of the scenarios of d if you do and d if you don't. You've probably seen them all anyway. I certainly have seen a lot. Fortunately, the great majority of people I deal with are pretty level-headed.

I have to let you know how the day went. Only 5 out of my 90 + students participated. However, one of my students in 4th period (the last period), wore a tee-shirt and on the front he wrote, "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." and on the back he had: Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. I question him and asked if he wore it in other classes and he said no teacher had reported him or made him take it off. He told me if "they" had the right to promote their views he did too.

Does it also have the part of Biblical teaching that says homosexuality is an abomination?

The answer is yes. References: Lev. 18:22, Deut. 23:17, Isa. 3:9, 1 Cor. 6:9, 1 Tim. 1:10, Jude 1:7.

The gays use the reference Genesis 1:31 to rationalize homosexuality. "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." (KJV). Apparently, every thing includes homosexuality.

Glad to hear that. I wish more would have participated, not because of the gay issue, but to keep the kids quiet.:). Let's have days of silence on every political issue there is and we'll have silent classrooms too. I just had a disturbing thought. Maybe all of us public school teachers are not out to spread the gay issue as the ed-libs allege. You must have not been doing your job if only 5 of your students took part. I am REALLY not doing my job if none of my students (or for that part no student I know around this area) took part. What are we going to do? Guess we'll have to name more kids Steve.
