I heard a blurb and haven't heard nothing else. This is a sad day.

ROME - Pope John Paul II has had fresh breathing problems and his health is worsening, Italy’s newspapers reported on Tuesday, overshadowing the Roman Catholic Church’s preparations for Easter Holy Week.

Several newspapers reported fresh fears over the health of the 84-year-old pontiff after rumours that he was being taken to hospital for the third time in seven weeks swept through the international media in Rome late Monday.

However, the Vatican insisted that there were no new developments in his condition.

“The pope’s overall condition is more serious today than it was when he was in the Gemelli,” conservative Rome daily Il Messaggero reported, citing sources at the Holy See.

“Pray for the pope, because he’s getting worse,” Il Messaggero quoted the pope’s private secretary, Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, as telling another Polish priest.

John Paul II was hospitalised twice last month with acute breathing problems linked to his Parkinson’s disease and the flu.

He had throat surgery on February 24 when doctors inserted a tube into his neck to ease his breathing. He has been back at the Vatican since March 13.

The left-wing daily La Repubblica said the pope had a “day of difficulty” on Monday. He had difficulty breathing and his medical team at the Vatican had to intervene to clear the tube into his neck, it said.

Unidentified doctors in John Paul II’s medical team were quoted by Corriere della Sera as saying there was no worsening of the pope’s condition, but that his convalescence was still far from over.

The pontiff, head of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide, appeared tired when he appeared briefly at his apartment window to bless tens of thousands of pilgrims in St Peter’s Square on Palm Sunday.

Instead of reassuring the faithful, however, the appearance only served to underline concerns about his health.

Stop. Those in the "kill Terri" crowd probably are people of goodwill who believe the medical findings that she's in a PVS. That is not evil and it is not completely unreasonable.

I don't think either side can say to absolute certainty and so they should err on the side of life, but the demonization of other good people and drawing absurd equivalencies must stop. For the sake of your own soul and in the name of common decency.

Praying that John Paul will recover. God's will be done, but, as for me, I'd like to have him around a while longer.

. . . demonization of other good people and drawing absurd equivalencies . . .

A major reason the forces of militant secularism (what the pope calls "the culture of death") are flourishing is that those who might be inclined to oppose them have reduced the New Testament to "Judge not lest ye be judged."

I am Catholic and love the Pope and don't need lectures about secularism or the faulty application of "judge not".

In fact, I am judging you (and don't shrink for one second from doing so) and others who make it their business to condemn others who are in fact good people who have made a reasonable conclusion and I find you and them lacking in deductive reasoning and your propensity to hateful rhetoric is distasteful in the extreme.

it's painless and dignified, you know

And if it isn't, no one lives to tell!

Thinking that the gov't could save a lot of $ by treating the poor and hungry around the world in a painless and dignified manner accomplished by withholding food and water from them. That's compasionate liberalism.

Anyway, prayers for John Paul, I hope the breaking news is in error.

This has been one horrible several days.

Let me see: Who was that politician who said, "You know, I am a Catholic myself. I was an altar boy. And I want you to know that I support a woman's right to choose . . . "? Oh, yeah: YOU PROBABLY VOTED FOR HIM!!!
