"probably more symbolic than anything. From what I've read ANWR won't bring much help to the shortfalls, especially in the short term."
yes and no
it will help but just the fact that they will allow drilling may and i repeat may begin to force the price to drop a bit
markets are funny that way

We should expose the hell of out of the 49 who tried to kill Anwar just like they would do to us. They get away with far too much IMHO.

I also know, the vast majority of oil in Alaska goes to Japan and does not even come to the US

Where did you hear that outrageously FALSE piece of information?

Landrieu is suspect to begin with here in Louisiana. A vote against ANWR drilling would be a death nail for her here in this oil dependent state.

Check post #53, Nickos! 30-50 year supply, most possibly. It won't meet ALL of the US oil needs, but it would stop the need for some imports.

"we want to drill in ANWR"

First, it is internal investment, always a good idea. Second, the oil is meaningful. Numbers are all over the map but the best estimate I have heard is in the vicinity of the output of one of our major suppliers like Saudi Arabia, for about 20-30 years. It would not come on line until 2015 or that vicinity so don't line up at the pumps yet. The biggest beneficiary might be California as they tend to get their oil from left coast areas anyway.

Why do we want to drill in ANWR? Is this symbolic or will the oil taken from ANWR actually address the current shortfalls and if so what are the numbers?

OK, basic common sense answers: 1) We want to drill in ANWR because there is oil there. Oil powers cars, trucks, buses, some power plants, and heats many houses in the northeast U.S. Plastics are made from oil, as are dozens of other chemicals and compounds. You probably used oil today. Oil does not magically come from nowhere. Duh. 2) Oil coming from ANWR will increase the oil SUPPLY. This is basic info here. Increased supply will help meet increasing demand.

I suggest you tune in with something called EARTH - it;'s a planet. There are people on it.

"What is fact and fiction here? First I hear that we're talking about six months worth of oil.. then I hear that these are large reserves."

I don't know... But in my mind, that ought to be the deciding factor.

I'd like to see a Wal*Mart built up there in ANWR, just to really tick them off.

At least a Caribou Coffee shop.

The three Democrats that voted for it are being flooded with hate mail by DUers - Landrieu, Akaka and Inouye! We should flood them with thank you mail!

"From what I've read ANWR won't bring much help to the shortfalls, especially in the short term."

True; but the long term becomes the short term in its own good time. When we didn't act before because it wasn't yet a crisis, the oil is now not pumping when we now do consider it a crisis. If ANWR fails again now, a few years down the road we'll *really* wish we'd acted when the opportunity presented itself.

at its projected peak output in 2070 ANWR would produce less than 2 percent of our needs, so it's symbollic...or shortsighted.

That kind of faulty logic can be used to justify not drilling anywhere in our territory or developing any of our own natural resources or even building any new nuclear reactors. Nobody is suggesting that ANWR is a permanent fix to our energy woes, but every little bit helps.

Perhaps, but I wouldn't have a problem if the environmentalist whacko's had won... Seems a little F'n stupid to me over a 6 month supply of oil.

Where do you get your information? According to Interior Sec'y, there is at least 30 YEARS of 1+ million barrels per day in ANWR. That would go a long way toward replacing what we now import from Saudi Arabia (1.5 M barrels/day).

Also, Prudhoe Bay was originally estimated to have 9 trillion barrels of oil; now pumping past 11 trillion. New estimates are 14+ trillion there. So we don't really know until we go after it.

Another little secret to this little discussion is that there are damned few caribou in what is now referred to as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Most of the herd in that part of the state is farther south; most of it is the most barren, God-forsaken country you've ever laid eyes on. It is not, as some of the Enviro-Nazi commercials tried to tell us, a pristine wilderness with mountains, trees, flowing streams and teeming with wildlife.

Oh, and if you doubt whether or not it'll have an impact on world prices or domestic supplies, check the original production estimates for Prudhoe Bay and compare them to what has been pumped out of Prudhoe thus far...
