Iraqi general shot dead by US troops at checkpoint west of Ramadi: police
Agence France Presse ^ | March 15, 2005

Posted on 03/15/2005 3:28:41 PM PST by HAL9000

RAMADI, Iraq - The deputy commander of the Iraqi army in western Al-Anbar province was shot dead by US troops at a checkpoint Tuesday night, a police officer said.

"The US forces opened fire at 8:00 pm (1700 GMT) on Brigadier General Ismail Swayed al-Obeid, who had left his base in Baghdadi to head home," police Captain Amin al-Hitti said.

"They spotted him on the road after the curfew, which goes into effect at 6 pm," the officer said in Baghdadi, 185 kilometres (142 miles) west of the capital.

No immediate reaction was available from the US military.

US forces have struggled to build up Iraqi security forces in Al-Anbar, where the country's insurgency is at its strongest, and many police and national guard units are suspected of having been infiltrated by rebels.

Damn - These unlucky things keep happening. Something is wrong when an Iraqi general doesn't know the danger of traveling after curfew.

If true, there is a systemic, major break down in coms and orders. Or worst, sabotage and disinfo being injected on purpose. I have heard rumors that foreign intelligence services have been recruiting troops in Iraq. Something else to consider.

Something is wrong when an Iraqi general doesn't know the danger of traveling after curfew.

Either he was stupid or running errands for the terrorists. In either case we don't need or want him commanding anybody.

I'm glad to see the troops are shooting first and asking questions later. There's no other way with these guys.

Agree - All of the things you mention are distinct possibilities. I favor some kind of disinformation designed to cause these accidents as the reason. You've got to think the infiltration level is pretty high at this point.

That was 1700GMT; that would my local 10AM MST; I have CBS Evening news on right now, and not a word yet. If true I would expect them of all nets to be trumpeting it.

If they aren't running it after having 6+ hours to get a nasty word out about it, I have my doubts.

I'll give them a few more minutes, then switch back to Fox.

Maybe, since he was the deputy commander of the Iraqi troops in the region, he thought he was entitled to be out after curfew. Why is it that when mistakes like this happen, some of us always feel like the person shot must have been doing something wrong. That is no better than the idiots on the other side saying the troops shooting him must have been doing it on orders or that it was some kind of conspiracy.

. . . he thought he was entitled to be out after curfew . . .

If so, I rest my case.

Apparently, if the AFP can be believed, we're shooting people on sight if they're out after curfew (and are unescorted?).

I don't know whether to believe it, but IF it's true, why wouldn't he know this and run the risk of violating curfew? A lot of loyal Saddam men, even officers, are still in the Army. We know this.

Did you mean to say; "If this were confirmed it would be all over the news. Keep the source in mind"

I'm a huge fan of internet news and actually refer to it as "Open Source News" but this is the down side... we get word first, but it's raw, unconfirmed and not quite reliable. We all have to do our own filtering and confirming as it somes in.

"It's not exactly what you said."

You didn't understand it the first time so I slightly rephrased it. The meaning WAS exactly the same:

First version:"I give this report no credence yet"

Second version: "I won't believe this until further proof is show"

1:"Our soldiers killing the wrong people is a bad thing."

2"if it is true it's a bad thing"

The difference is...?

There is no difference.

Next time, engage on the issue, don't invent crap to create a nonissue and then whine when called on being a snarky punk.

HAL9000 do a google news search on al-Obeid

Iraqi parliament sits today: Car bombs kill six, destroy US Humvee

“The US forces opened fire at 8:00 pm (1700 GMT) on Brigadier General Ismail Swayed al-Obeid, who had left his base in Baghdadi to head home,” police Captain Amin al-Hitti said. Separately, a US Marine with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force died Monday in Anbar, a troubled province that has been a hotbed of guerrilla activity and includes the cities of Fallujah, Ramadi and Qaim, officials said on Tuesday.

No, you didn't, you were playing to the crowd by trying to distort and now you're backing off. If it was a joke, you would have said so in your second post.

No brains and no b***s gets you no respect. Either stand up for your position or don't invent crap and then whine "I was joking!" when your defense fails.

I did understand it the first time. I made a joke about fake but accurate because of the phrasing you chose.

It was not meant in malice and I was sure any freeper would "get it" and laugh.

You then insulted my intelligence when you took umbrage to which I responded in kind, but on a much milder note, by calling you "little boy". I'll apologize for that, but you are off track by getting so upset over something that was not meant. And it is not nice to call names like "fool" to a nice person like me.

You're such a nice person you compared a FReeper to the New York Times. Nice guy. I guess you forgot the ;) in your original post...and somehow "forgot" it was a joke till your third post (your second one accusing me of changing my story, instead of a simple "Uh, I was joking").

I like honest jokers and honest FReepers, not snide insult-tossers who then cry when confronted.
