Guy in the dorm room across from me caught a coral snake and kept it in a tank in his room with screen top and a couple books. Was planning to sell it to a guy in Oregon but someone ratted him out.
We always suspected his roomate ;-)
They taste like beer... bad beer.
If you come upon them while they are sunning, or drying off, they are almost in a stupor. They're also attracted to vibrations.
Years ago while hunting my buddy and were looking at aerial photos on the hood of his Bronco while it was idling. This cottonmouth poked it's head out of some reeds, saw us and headed right towards us. Curious, we climbed up into the truck and watched as this snake came right up to the truck and nosed the tires while we were watching from above. After that we moved down the road a hundred yards or so.
About 25 years ago a water skier here in FL fell in to reeds that had a whole nest. He died from something like 60 bites.
Ouch. As bad as it is to die by snakebite, the worst part of his death must have been how horribly scared he was while he was in the nest and being bitten. Man, what a terrible way to go.
