I agree, that info should only be released with parental consent. If a student is a minor, the parents should be involved deciding whether their child's info can be used by big govt.

Yes. Yes!
Okay! Meantime, do a little digging on those who are promoting all this and you will find Mike Honda and his friends are open America Haters and leftwing activists doing all they can to use our freedoms to aid and abet our sworn enemies.( This is public record.)
We are a nation at war. I suppose you know what our duties and obligations are. We have not conscripted any person into military service or abridged anyones rights.

Well we keep God out of the schools, now we can keep the military out because we must stop patriotism. But, we can teach the kids how to put on rubbers, let leftist teachers spew anti-american hatred, let bullys run rampant against decent kids, close our eyes to kids on drugs, don't concern ourselves about actually educating kids and on and on and on.

Colleges do not have a Constitutional requirement to protect our country. The military does. The military does that by recruiting because the public doesn't want a draft. Therefor the military, per the Secretary of Defense, following Congressional mandate, must recruit.

You are favoring blantant discrimination against an activity that is for our national defense and without showing any reason that a minor should be shielded from military recruiters while fair game for trade schools and colleges.

Is the military a good enough career for you yet not good enough for children to know about?

And you'd be surprised to see how ignorant most high school kids are about the military and its opportunities.

Can you offer any rational reasons why minors should be excluded from having recruiters contact them?

Why?

The recruiters have LAWS that they must follow regarding directory information.

They work with directory information.

If you want an effective volunteer force you must allow the recruiters the opportunity to compete for the best prospects.

Otherwise you really don't want an effective volunteer force.

Each family has the right to request that directory information be withheld from recruiters. They can then contact only those opportunities that they wish to restrict themselves to.

While I think the Cong. Honda's bill is terribly misguided and is on a track to nowhere, there is an information gap that I think you're unaware of. The service academies don't recruit. Each service academy has a corps of retired, reserve or former officers who attend the college fairs/college nights at local high schools to inform interested students and parents about the institution, military opportunities and obligations as a commissioned officer. They are known by various names: Liaison Officers--USMA & USAFA, Blue & Gold Officers - -USNA. They are not recruiters.

They are local residents doing a public service for their academy or service. They hand out materials and advise the students and parents of the academic program the potential candidate for appointment should pursue to meet the academic criteria, the physical fitness criteria, the health standard, and so on.

Obtaining an appointment to a service academy requires a nomination from a congressional source or the President as well as stringent academic, medical, and fitness tests. The application process is lengthy and arduous (if it were easy anyone could do it). College night service academy information officers are as far from a recruiter as there can be. The initiative must be that of the student/candidate, not the service academy.

Nope. You just repeat your opinion without backing it up.

If you just want to admit that it is your feelings and not rational thought driving you, that is fine, too.

Families can always request to allow access to that info. So I don't see the problem.

Raise the enlistment age to 19. That way kids are out of school and are trying to decide what to do with their future.

A lot of recruiters B.S. kids with wonderful tales about getting laid in exotic ports, making tons of money, traveling the world. Although somewhat true, the main reason for joining the military is to fight and die for your country.

That's not the way it works and other than those who are anti military, I don't see a problem with the current laws.

If a school is going to release directory information to any college it has to do so for all. And if it releases to colleges, why not trade schools? And if it releases to trade schools, then why not military recruiters?

Parents can request in writing for directory information to not be public, but that is for all, not just one or two.

Again, why do you desire to prevent militray recruiters from contacting minors? A 17 year old in the military is far better supervised and cared for than a 17 year old in college.

"By being "merit scholar" you consented to allowing your information to colleges, etc..."

Maybe I did. I certainly don't recall having done so.

"All I'm saying is Fed Government/military should not have access to a minor's school records..."

And I disagree. The Fedgov and military should have access to any information necessary to get into contact with the prospective high school graduate. Trade schools and colleges have/get access to this information WITHOUT getting permission from students or parents. Military recruiters should have the same privilege.

>By being "merit scholar" you consented to allowing your information to colleges, etc... <

Wrong again.Merit scholars are automaticly named from scores of PSAT takers. The only consent given is that you take a test you want shared with recruiters for educational institutions, scholarship providers and money lenders. The military falls into 2 of these 3 categories.

Privacy for minors from Fed Agencies....

We're not talking 'Federal Agencies', we're talking military recruiters. And you never say why, just that you donwanna....

Do yo think that the recruiters send school directory information to some data bank in DC or something?

The military uses it for recruiting purposes only and is bound by the Privacy Act and cannot release the information to other agencies without consent. And they generally only keep it for 2 years.

Work with me here...DOD is a Fed Agency...

I see folks saying others have access to the information. I see no need for anyone having this access with out express permission...

Although somewhat true,

No, totally true! At least for a great number of military people. "Tons of money" is somewhat relative, but recruiters also use something called a pay chart, so recruits know what they're due to earn.

... the main reason for joining the military is to fight and die for your country.

Not true! The military should A) be strong and awesome enough to deter conflicts; B) General Patton plainly stated that it wasn't the military's place to die for the country but to make the other poor dumb ba...d die for his country.

And do you really think that college recruiters talk about the grind of classes, of women being sexually assaulted on campus, of the idiots who die each year binge drinking or falling off of balconies in Florida on spring break, of unfair professors, and of spending thousands of dollars earning degrees that won't even get one a job flipping burgers?

Yeah, right.

You are purposely trying to make it look like directory information is easily available to any and all federal agencies when that is not the case and I have explained that more than once.

I'll stop pushing on this since you cannot defend your position.
