Police: Bush/Cheney bumper sticker sent man into road rage
ABC Action News, Tampa/St. Petersburg Florida ^ | 3/9/2005 | ABC Action News

Posted on 03/10/2005 5:37:17 AM PST by Bigturbowski

TAMPA - A Tampa man is out of jail after a possible road rage incident that gives new meaning to the term "driving left of center."

Nathan Winkler, 31, was arrested overnight and charged with aggravated stalking for allegedly terrorizing a mother and her two children.

According to police, Winkler pulled up alongside Michelle Fernandez as she was headed south on Armenia and began beeping his horn and flailing his arms, pointing at her. Fernandez, meanwhile, could not see Winkler's face because of a handmade sign in his window that read, "Never forget Bush's illegal oil war murdered thousands in Iraq."

"Apparently, this starts over political views or bumper stickers. She had a Bush/Cheney sticker on the back of her car. There's just no excuse for it to escalate to what it did," observed Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin.

Winkler apparently grew more agitated as they continued to drive along, allegedly trying to run Fernandez's car off the road several times over the next few miles.

The 34-year-old grew increasingly concerned for herself and her two children in the car and called 911. Action News obtained recordings of those calls, in which the fear in her voice is evident.

No one would answer the door at Winkler's South Tampa home. "Look, he's trying to run me off the road," she is heard telling the 911 dispatcher. "Look at him. You [censored] idiot! Whatever, you moron! Get away from me."

"I was blowing my horn at someone because I'm running stop signs and everything to get away from him," she added later.

But investigators say even that did not stop Winkler from pulling in front of Fernandez and forcing her to stop. As he tried to run up to her car, she drove away and was headed to police district headquarters when she finally managed to lose Winkler.

Cops caught up with Winkler at his home not long afterwards, where he reportedly blamed Fernandez for starting the altercation by making an obscene gesture. He was booked into jail on a charge of aggravated stalking, but was free by morning on $2,000 bond.

Back at home Wednesday morning, Winkler declined to answer the door. From inside, a female voice told Action News that the incident was simply a "misunderstanding" with another driver.

Fernandez, meanwhile, could not be reached for comment.

Check out the comments about this on Demo Underground. They practically want to give this guy the Congressional Medal of Freedom - and hope his act of violence gets people to rub off their Bush/Cheney stickers. Ah, free speech for me, not for thee.

Sounds like a real he-man, picking out a woman with small children to go after. I wonder why he didn't find some 90 year old seasoned citizen to accost? But then again with a name like Nathan Winkler he probably got kicked around enough just getting through his school days.

I live in Massachusetts of all places. I was afraid to put a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on my car. I thought someone might key my car, but this is just crazy.

I have a Bush campaign mouse pad and mug. It's bad enough that I have to get dirty looks from the cable guy or whatever stranger in my home. What am I talking about? Dirty looks from my friends and family too.

i totally believe this. i had something similar happen before the election, i was picking up my 16 yo daughter at the mall in suburban VA. a car pulled up along side me and some 30 somethings, husband and wife WITH A BABY IN A CARSEAT started yammering at me about Bush, doing a thumbs down etc. They had been honking etc. and i had no idea what their problem was til they started badmouthing Bush. i looked at them incredulously and said you two really need to grow up. i had my 10 yo daughter in the back seat and the 16 yo and my girls were just grinning and laughing and doing a thumbs UP for Bush! it was hysterical, it continued through several stop lights. i had never seen anything like it. I don't blame this woman, if he was being nasty, i would have called the cops too.

An incident similiar to this, but with no political ramifications, happened to me in Dallas several years ago. I think the two thuggy looking characters did indeed target me because I'm old!

I managed to get away from them--and haven't driven since--without being armed--and ready!

Released on only 2,000 bond? After trying to run her off the road and actually boxing her in and getting out of his car to attack? What this guy really needs is a two week psychiatric evaluation and a restraining order.

Hope she or her husband have the appropriate 'home protection equipment'.

Looks like Florida has its left wing hate-Bush nut jobs. I would like to see this guy prosecuted to the maximum extent of all applicable laws. The lady should really research this with a good attorney and see if there's any scheme by which this third class a-hole can see some significant jail time.

BTW, did they cut back on this guy's Lithium meds or what?

My 20 year old college son drives a little old beat up car with a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on it. He was returning to college and a left wing wacko with a Kerry sticker pulled up alongside him and gave him the finger, was shouting at him, and making a complete fool of himself. I guess this nut case thought that it was unbelievable that a young man in an old little car would support a REPUBLICAN! But you see ------- all 3 of my boys are REPUBLICANS!

I still have The Swift Vets stickers with the battle ships on my truck back window. But I removed the top part that read, "Expose Kerry's Fraud", so my truck would have a better chance to be left alone by looney lefties in a parking lot! ;-)

In all but the most insane cases, there's little doubt NRA stickers do a decent job of giving pause to would-be road harrassers. But guys like Winkler could get so agitated after seeing a Bush/Cheney sticker that they might not see the (smaller) NRA sticker.

Congressional Medal of Freedom

If he chooses the wrong person (notice the coward chose a woman with two kids in the car?) to pull this s**t with he'll receive that award posthumously.

BTW, Nathan Winkler's street address and phone in Tampa are easily accessible in the Florida White Pages, in case anyone's interested. Personally, I'm full up with turning the other cheek on these leftist bastards.

Roger that.

If some leftist maniac is trying to run me off the road, I would do the following:

  1. Calmly pull the car over to the shoulder.

  2. Check my carry rig and tap the magazine once to make sure its seated.

  3. Wait for events to unfold.

I have three stickers on the back of my huge gas-guzzling Chevy Suburban: The oval W sticker, a Defend Freedom 2nd Amendment sticker and a USMC sticker. My NRA sticker got peeled off by someone. I live in Omaha though, so the most we get around here is the international symbol for bad driving.

The media is letting the left off the hook by callign this "road rage".

This is not "road rage", this is political intimidation, plain and simple. There is no indication that she cut him off, or performed any other maneuver that set him off.

When I went to see what the DUmmies were saying, I discovered the following:

Right vs. Left: The Elements
3. What is the function of government?
The Right: The function of government is to protect the fundamental rights of life, liberty and property – nothing more. "Government is not the Solution." (Ronald Reagan, 1981). "Government is the most dangerous institution known to man." (John Hospers). "Who is best qualified to spend your money? You, or the government?" (George W. Bush).

The Left: Government "of, by, and for the people" is a legitimate surrogate of the people's interests and a protector of the people's rights. "To secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the government." (Declaration of Independence, 1776). Citizens must constantly be on guard against abuses of office. However, the answer to bad government is better government, not the abolition of government.

Look at how the quoted the Declaration – “deriving their just powers from the consent of the government”. Their true colors shine through.
